Got the Itch Back

Well its happening again. I had a 1998 BMW 740il and sold it a few years back. I have been gone from all the BMW forums now for 2 or 3 years. I must confess I missed the all the information and communications. I especially missed by 740. Man I just can't get that car out my system. Been looking hard lately at getting another 740. Currently I am lending towards a 2001 740I or IL.

I want to stay with the same body style as my 98 but I like the upgrades of the 2001. Are the any major drawbacks with this year?

The only thing I don't like about the 2001 is the water cooled alternator
IMO . Wish they stuck to the old alternator

I too like the 2001. Per Edmunds, the only moderately reoccurring problem has been failure of the MAF Sensor. Typically keeping on top of clean air intake filters should handle that. As far as the water-cooled alternator, if you keep the proper coolant (I use Pentosin in my 1995) and ONLY distilled water and annual flush that should not be a problem. I would also (unless you get documents with it that it had been recently done) change the Transmission Filter, Gasket and fluid (I use Redline Fully Synthetic D4-ATF, but there are several excellent synthetics available, and I do it every 50K to 70K). These are beautiful machines and highly addictive. I have been looking at 2001 also, for my next one.
