Hi,

I've owned the above diesel X3 from new and live on the island of Crete. Over the last few days the car has developed a problem and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts re what it might be?

The engine runs fine and then the revs fall and even in neutral they stutter and falter and won't rev above 2000 revs. If I stop, switch off the engine and then start again the problem goes away but after several minutes returns. There are no lights showing on the console.

Being Christmas the local BMW garage is closed. The car had a chip fitted two years ago but to date this has not caused a problem.

Because it seems to 'fix' itself when turned on and off - like a computer - I'm thinking it may be electronic. The transmission seems to be hunting for gears which is a little alarming and I will obviously take it to the dealer as soon as it reopens but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what the problem might be.

Thanks,

TD

2) When did you change the diesel filter last time?

There's 40,000 km on the clock
The car had all filters changed by the BMW dealer around 8 months ago. The guys here are pretty good.

TD.

Sorry, no idea. Mine is at 132.000km, never seen anything like that. Let us know when you find out what was the problem, please.

Hi,

I took my X3 to the garage that fitted the performance chip two years ago, wanting to check that out before going to the BMW dealer. They've disconnected the chip and asked me to drive the car for a week and let them know if this resolves the problem. If yes, then they will reset the chip parameters. If no, then they will look further or send me to BMW.

The drop in power / acceleration was quite noticeable on the drive home ie you forget what kind of boost you get from a chip remap.
