Ward's 10 Best Engines 2012
Ward's had good things to say about the N55 & N20, but more impressively described Audi's supercharged 6.
Now I gotta drive for myself. You 335i pilots - did you prefer your engine over Audi's, or wasn't that an issue? . |

Good Lord. Are we to believe: BMW pilots do not consider Audi as competition? |

I currently owned a F10 with the N55 engine and had a A5 with the Audi 3.0T powertrain, also driven the 328xi many times, once for a day. My opinion of the 3 engines is about the same as Ward's, all three are very nice engines but the Audi 3.0T is the best of the three. The 3.0T is very responsive, way under rated, even more so than the N20.

Don't convince me with facts.
Having said that, the S4 is on the expensive side, and Audi does try to make it somewhat exclusive. |

Audi's 3 is a supercharged engine, so it is bound to feel more responsive, perhaps at the expense of slightly lower mpgs.

To tell to the turth, I thought my A6 got similar if not better gas mileage than my F10, and thats whithout the ASS.

After my experiences with Audis and the fact we lack a San Diego dealership (unless you count the scum in Miramar), nope, never really a contender.

I test drove an A6 with the sport package and I found the engine quite responsive with a decent powerband. The supercharger's are nice haves, not dealing with turbo lag is a nice change. That said, the car itself was not as fun to drive or as well balanced as the 335i. It wasn't far off though and I was left impressed with the A6. Ultimately I didn't choose it. Audi CA was a bit of a dbag, they lowballed me on my trade in, and wouldn't budge on the price of the A6. BMW was better to deal with and really, outside of the S4, which they had none in stock, I just didn't find the Audi's as engaging.
I see the N55 taking some knocks in other posts, I don't get it. I think it's a great engine. Responsive, fast, sounds great. No issues so far, no complaints from me.

Just the fact that you thought the A6's performance was close to the 335 tells you that the S4 will blow the 335i out of the water

Do yourself and the forum a favor and try to have something even remotely intelligent to say before you post.

The S4 is indeed a great performer, no doubt. But this is going a little overboard. The S4 is marginally better, yes. But "blow out of the water", no, and I've driven both.

Perhaps I exaggerated a bit, but the S4 does perform better than the 335i. Unfortunately, the S4 is hard to find, which makes the actual buying price much higher.
