2000 e53 battery voltage 11.7 replace battery or alternator?

I have a 2000 X5 (e53) 4.4. Yesterday the red battery light came on shortly there after it began to systematically shut down systems then died. Hauled it home recharged the battery overnight voltage reads 11.7, 10.7 while the motor is running, the battery light is still on. Should I replace the battery or the alternator?

Alternator. Bosch alternators pretty much lock th top voltage to 13.85 Volts. Anything much below 13.5 Volts with the engine running suggests the alternator is defective. Having said that I would also check the battery under load in case it has joined its buddy the alternator.

If you have the V8 with the water cooled alternator, sit down when the part guy tell you how much it cost. Talk about sticker shock.

I did not want to mention that bit. I hate to kick a guy when he is down.

The battery warning light is about the most misunderstood warning of them all...it illuminates when the BATTERY is NOT being charged...thus it reveals that the battery is the VICTIM...not the culprit.
