325i engine with 330i engine?

as some of you know i have a cracked head and i don't know how the previous owner drove it so its probably not a good idea to just get a new head cause i don't know the shape of the aluminum block.
Will the 3.0 out of a 330i bolt straight into my 2001 325i? what years are compatible with this swap? any advice?
Thanks

Bolt in? Sure, no problem. With any modern car, its the electronics that need to be considered. Use the search feature both in this forum, and at e46fanatics.com for those that have considered this.

I have done it. I re-used all of the 2.5 accessories though.

Your engine should be the M54 B25. This engine was 2.5 liters, and offered in 3-Series sedans from 2001-2005. It was offered in the coupes through 2006. The 3.0 liter version of this engine was designated M54 B30, and was offered in the same year range. These engines were also offered in the E39 5-Series sedans from 2001-2003. Physically, these engines are very similar externally. (The previous information is for US specification cars.)

The electronic pitfalls of a swap were mentioned in the preceding posts. Remember also that the cars had different gearing from the factory for the 2.5 vs. 3.0 models. Another consideration is that some of the early M54 B30 engines developed oil consumption problems later in life. This did not seem to be as much of a problem on the M54 B25 engines.

The intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds are different. I am curious how you are going to deal with the electronics.

Is there a particular reason why you want to upgrade the engine? Why not find a less expensive 2.5L engine without all the additional hassle?

I've seen the 2.5 engines for as little as $800 before; several in the $1000 range. and it isn't just the dme flash for the 3.0, but also the tow truck to the dealer and time. I personally world stay with the 2.5 for the simplicity.

Well I own a Chevy with a car hauler so I could get it there all it would take is some gas, plus I'm not gonna buy an engine with more than 100k miles, just not worth it

ok so i was thinking, I see alot of these motors for sale and his is the newest and lowest miles for only 1800. wouldnt that be the most expensive? i see some with 130k to 150k selling for 2500 why are they more expensive?
i may have to ask him if the engine is still in the car cuz i want proof of mileage

They can price their engines as high as they want but it doesn't mean they will sell.

And absolutely, definitely find proof of mileage before you buy any engine. I made the mistake once of buying a Suzuki engine with only 55K miles on it -- after we traced it back to the original vehicle by the vin #, we found that it really had nearly 100K miles. It still worked, thankfully, but lesson learned.

i decided i'm going to let him do it, its a shop that only works on bmw's and mercedez cars. he said they do the swap all the time, he can map the 330i maps for the computer and have it in in a day or two. i looked at the engine its really nice and he guarantees it. I'm taking it in wednesday and hopefully have it back thursday or friday turn key ready to go.

i drove a 330i today and man they have alot more get up and go than my 2.5 I cant wait!

I am curious as to why you decided to remove the engine without the transmission. I find it much harder and time consuming compared to dropping the engine/transmission from the bottom with the subframe.
