318is axle/diff gone bang!

Diff on my '91 had a slight oil weep noticed at the MOT and advisory issued, being a numpty I ignored it as it seemed just a fine misting. Fast forward five months and approx 5000 miles and car makes a high pitched screech from the rear end at 80 MPH followed by a rapid slowing of the car, a bang, smell of oil and a very loud rumbling noise! So I'm guessing the diff/drive shafts are lunched?

Car drove (roughly) and I limped home. My question now is firstly is it worth fixing a twenty year old car worth approx 500 as I'm guessing a garage will charge an arm and a leg or secondly should I source second hand parts and is it a do..able job for a fairly competent home mechanic with just a jack, axle stand and regular tools? Do I need just the diff or the axle complete inc drive shafts etc. The car seems too good to scrap but I'm not sure if it's economical to repair? Lastly, what should I be paying for a good used axle, diff?

Thanks in advance :-)
