Advice on a 2004 I test drove today...

Checked out this one today. Took it for a test drive. Looking for some advice. Thoughts?

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ctd/3501602088.html

Pros:
leather in good condition, little wear on bolsters. Expected wear for an 04.
Clean paint outside, no dents, minimal work needed on rock chips, scratches, etc...
Nicely optioned (Nav, HK sound)
Clean engine, looks well cared for.
Unmodded
Services well documented on carfax. Looks like all service work done at Princeton BMW
Drove well, clutch felt great (6spd). Healthy sound from engine (no knocks, no pings) didn't see any leaks after driving.

Cons:
90+ K miles (expected for year)
Bad Curb rash on 3/4 tires
Driver Side door handle and trim pretty worn down
Service engine soon light on
No record of 1200 mile service being done on carfax. Had sales manager call Princeton BMW and they have no record of 1200 mile service ever being done.

KBB lists 19400 for dealer purchase in excellent condition. I'd say condition is good at best. Also, the lack of a 1200 mile
Service is worrisome. Is 16.5 a reasonable starting offer if one were to be made or am I making too big a deal over the missing service? Or is this a vehicle to not even consider due to the missing service?

Don't fall in love with how pretty it is. Carfax? Has it been hit, and if so, were the repairs well done? Pay a BMW mechanic to inspect it. How many previous owners? These things tend to be beaten nearly to death and still look nice. Rear dif cover mounts blown from drag racing? Dif can make the classic M-clunk, but shouldn't be too noisy. Syncros shift nicely, hot and cold, especially 2nd gear? How's the rust situation underneath; Winter driven in salt? Any water in the trunk, battery compartment, elsewhere? SES light could be simple or expensive; find out the codes and cost to fix. Valves should have been adjusted every 30k miles; Does the record show it? Was the vanos ever replaced? Odds/ends: heater controls work (not just get hot; can you turn it down)? A/C? Parking brake?

If they are serious they could replace the tires, i dont see them not selling a car for two brand new tires. But since it has higher milage hit them hard because you might not be able to get a lengthy ext warranty due to mileage being high. You could low ball them because there are plenty other M's out there with lower mileage in my opinion.

Not too hijack this thread but I test drove a 02 vert with 80k on it. When shifting it was sort of notchy sometimes, like a double click. Is that ok?

do you mean it bang shifts, or granny shifts? Worst case bring a mechanic with you that knows about cars or the SMG tranny.

If the car has made it to 90K with no obvious engine or transmission problems, the 1200-mile service shouldn't matter. As long as it has been serviced regularly over its life, it should be about where any other 90K M3 would be mechanically.

Do you mean the wheels are curb rashed? Curbed tires would have a bubble in the sidewall and be dangerous to drive on.

@flyinglow78 you know how these car salesman are they just try to dress shine the tires up lolol. I had them knock off $500 off my sticker price for medium tread tires. Us consumers are making big purchases i think the dealers atleast owe us a set of tires with 50% of tread life.

If SMG, it is probably you, unless you have some experience driving SMG. It is not the same as a manual or an automatic.
