Unhappy Door Open with Remote but car wont start

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a new key for my 2001 BMW 525i from ebay. I had the key cut and I programmed the key so now it opens the doors and the trunk. The problem is that the key turns and all the lights turn on but it doesn't start. Do I need to do something different to get the car to start?

what is your battery voltage? I know it sounds odd to ask, but if your battery is weak, it won't turn the car over even though other things work.
Try to jump the car and see if that makes a difference.
If it still doesn't, your key is the culprit.

The car starts with my old key but not with the new key. I thought once it was programmed it will open and lock the doors, open the trunk and start the car. The new key does everything except start the car.

Been here: Mine did the same. On mine there is no chip to tell the comp that that is the right key. You can only get that from the dealer.
Or so i was told.

for that money it can NOT HAVE CHIP

and chips come in keys only from Dealer. Key has to be custom ordered with ID you own car.

Send them an email and tell them what it is doing. I would bet that you are dealer bound for a new key or to have them program it.

They worded it so I does not really say it will start the car? I may be wrong. https://ikeyless.com/vehicles/BMW/5-.../2001/1000416/

You can't program a new key to your car without special equipment. I'm talking about the EWS part of the key, that is what prevents you from starting the car. If the EWS chip was successfully copied the car would have started. Since the car won't start it isin't. Dealer can't help you. Dealer sells keys that come pre-coded to your car and those are ordered based on VIN. There might be a car locksmith that got the special equipment to code new keys to EWS, but I highly doubt it.

I just tried something out of curiosity and it worked. I took my original key turned it to the on position then turned it off. I then quickly inserted the new key and tried to turn on the car and it turned on. To my surprise it worked, I then turned the car off and tried to turn it on again and it turned on. I'm hoping it continues to work, I'll keep you posted.

Well, it looks like I have to get someone to program the key. My little idea didn't last for long. I found someone that has a machine that could do it for 50 bucks.

FYI: if anyone is curious about the above...EWS has a 10 second window were it DOES NOT require verification after a verified key has just shut down the vehicle.

I'm not sure why BMW engineered EWS that way...but its like a small window that gives EWS a reprieve in the event the car is shut down, but then quickly restarted...like if you pulled in the drive, then remembered you were supposed to pick up a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk.

This 10 second window is mentioned in the "workshop hint" in the left gray box in the image below:
