Retrofitting heated front seats 2004 e53

Hi,
My 2004 3.0 petrol is prewired for front heated seats.

Just purchased 2 seats, replacement switch panel and relay...

I have replaced the fascia switch panel...straight forwards swap. The backlight on all switches including the new heated set switches are working as is PDC,boot, hpc buttons......however despite putting in the new relay neither of the heated seat switches light up.

Is there a fuse i need to add for power ?
Will the switch not light up until the replacement heated seats are installed with corresponding connections ?

Cheers

G

I removed old sports seat - 2 nuts at front at 2 at rear - as long as power to seats its easy to move them to and for to get access to the bolts/nuts.

Slide the black cover off the wiring connection and remove bolt anchoring seat belt. Once free seat will come out - but its heavy!

I installed the passenger seat, connected up the existing wiring and hey presto passenger heated front seat worked.

So the heated seat switch will only come on if seat circuit present. The relays and fuses must be all present (car is 2004 3.0 X5 Sport)

Drivers side bit more complicated - unable to move the donor seat to and fro in the breakers yard - so undone the 4 nuts holding the seat to the 2 rails.

Took out drivers seat from my car and swapped over the rails from my sports seats - to the donor seat - fairly straightforwards.

Installed the seat and all working, again heated switch switch now active.

Only problem - is when I installed drivers seat, there is now an airbag light on dash 0 so I guess there is a connection problem or switch (?) faulty from donor car.

Anyone have a circuit diagram to try and track down the fault ?

Cheers

Gary

Was the battery disconnected when you swapped the seats? If not, then that's why the air bag light is on. You can't disconnect any of the SRS (supplemental restraint system) wiring harnesses while there's power to the car...it will set off a fault for whichever harness was disconnected.

SRS harnesses must be disconnected & reconnected while the car is powered down to NOT get an air bag light illuminated. You'll have to go to dealer to get it reset if you don't have an SRS reset tool.

Hi

Nope - hadnt disconnected battery first. Hopefully then its just a reset....

How quickly should the BMW seats heat up ... my CLK took seconds but these seem to take sometime even on the 3rd setting ?

Cheers

My experience with BMW heated seats (my e32/e34/e38/e39/e53) has been that they heat-up rather quickly. Heat should be felt within a minute or two...depending also on what you're wearing. If I wearing a short jacket that doesn't cover my bum/butt...then the heat is felt rather quickly through my pants. If I'm wearing a longer coat/jacket that is creating extra layers of "padding"...then it obviously takes longer to feel the warmth from the heated seat pads.
