What do F10 drivers buy for their teenagers to drive?
We're looking for a vehicle for our daughter. I just noticed Kcustom's daughter drives a 2006 325i and it prompted the thought, "I wonder what other forum members buy for their teenagers to drive."
Any takers? -Corey |

My daughter got Moms car a couple years ago, we figured safe, reliable and best of all paid for lol. She wanted an xB Scion, now she is very glad she has the 325. I added tunes, tinted windows and she is a happy camper : )

We gave our daughter her mom's 2002 330i when she was a senior in high school. Drove it for 5 years in college and now 2 years out of college on her first job. 120,000 miles, still looks and runs like new.

In 2008 I bought my daughter a used 2007 328I with 14,500 miles during her senior year in college. It was loaded with everything but navigation. $26,500 was a great price as it had a sticker new over $42,000. She is getting ready to turn 100,000 miles. Great car.

If you're a cool parent and truly loved your children, you'd get them an M3 or M6.

With all those airbags and crumple zones, they'll be fine. Now, as for STDs...that's a different story.

Im working and taking care of my turning 16 brother by myself (because i use mom n pop money way too much when I was younger, its time to be responsible).
He wants a car for his coming bday and he told me he only wants German. My quota for getting a car for him is 16-17k. I gave him 3 choices: 1.brand new base model VW Jetta 2. 2005 x3 with 60,000 miles. Or my fiance 2006 325i with 100,000 miles on it. He chose the X3. He said it looks cool and manly with the rail rack. He also can easily drive to the beach carrying his surfing board. Lastly, he said with a SUV he feels safer and has broader view.

I was a high mileage driver in my "work" cars [always had a "toy" reserved for sunny days]. So when one of my cars was ready to be replaced the 'old' one went to one of the kids. They didn't seem to mind much after my first recycle [a Red Rabbit diesel] went to the oldest [our son]. He was always a VW fan and at 17, any car was welcome - especially one that could be driven all week on $5 of fuel! When he graduated college he bought his own VW - a GTI! So the Rabbit was passed to the middle child who promptly replaced the sagging headliner with an Andy Warhol Campbell Soup print material - SOooooo appropriate! She drove that through her undergraduate years {except when the bitter cold 0-degree Syracuse winters left it parked at her Sorority House}. When she graduated my A VW Quantum Wolfsburg Edition ... 5cyl 5 speed ... was ready to recycle so it went to her. And, coincidentally it was time for me to upgrade my daily drivers so I bought my 'first' BMW an '86 e28 524TD!
And the WV Rabbit (now renamed to the "Energizer Bunny") was passed to our 'baby'. She drives a Prius now :-( Of all the cars we've passed on or bought for the kids I always felt the WV Rabbit best met important criteria for our youthful drivers: (1) Safe, (2) conservative, and at the time, (3) just trendy enough so they wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen by neighbors, friends, & peers.

I would never get my teenager a BMW, too much temptation and not enough experience behind the wheel. My kid will be getting some thing big, safe and slow.

We bought our son an ALMS Edition TT that had just come off lease when he turned 16. He had already been driving to school for 6 months on a school permit in a 328xi.
He is now 22yo, graduated from college, and still driving the TT. It's been a great car for him. |

I am leery of buying my kid anything that could be labeled as prestige car, and it will likely be a used Toyota. Granted my oldest is 8 and I have 5 and 2 year old, so I have a bit of time to think about it. At 36 years old, I still feel 18, so perhaps as I gain experience and years my thoughts will change.

Everyone is providing great feedback here. I had a 1997 Honda Accord EX-L I purchased new way back when I was in school. I kept that car for years and could have given it to my oldest, but I sold it to my brother for $1 a few years ago for his oldest! If it wasn't sold to help him out, I'd be kicking myself now. So we don't have a car ready to hand down at this point except perhaps my wife's Odyssey, which needs to be changed out, but I don't think that's a good vehicle for a teenager. Right now we're leaning towards finding a used Civic or Accord. I really loved that old Accord I used to have. -Corey |
