What do you think about the 3M Paint Defender?

I was wondering if anyone already used the 3M Paint Defender Kit?

This is from their press release:

"ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M, the market leader in professionally applied protection films, is disrupting the traditional notions of vehicle paint protection. The new 3M™ Paint Defender System harnesses the power of 3M technology by spraying on as a liquid before transforming into a clear, durable film.

The added barrier serves as a lasting line of defense against everyday hazards on the road, such as road chips, that threaten vehicle appearance.

This system is the latest innovation from the company’s Automotive Aftermarket Division and embodies 3M’s broad expertise in polymers, weathering, adhesives and films.

The 3M™ Paint Defender System formula started as a way to temporarily preserve vehicles during transport from the factory to the dealer. The original solution, developed by a curious 3M employee, addressed a fear among dealers about damage to their vehicles’ exteriors before they left the lot.

3M experts collaborated over the course of the next two years to evolve the initial formula. What started out as murky, brush-on “goo” transformed into today’s Paint Defender System that addresses a broader consumer need. Highlights included:

Invisible: Scientists tweaked 248 different test formulas over the course of eight months before landing on a winning chemical balance that offered 100% clarity and a seamless finish.

Easy Application: Months of advanced adhesives exploration yielded a unique aerosol delivery system that allows both the novice and experienced customers to feel comfortable using themselves.

Durable: Product developers pursued extensive in-house testing to determine the film’s durability using world-renowned research facilities, industry standard yet proprietary weathering systems, and gravelometer impact tests under ASTM-D3170.

Removable: Collaborative teams refined the formula’s compatibility and concentration elements to achieve a thin film that was thick enough to protect, but also removable".

Very cool as I refuse to put the clear wrap on my car's front, as it is always noticeable to me and spoils the look. Though I wonder why they don't say to apply it to the bumper? I also wonder if it dries TRULY clear or if you can see it. I also wonder again why you can't spray it on the entire car then. I came across this protectant spray stuff once that claimed to basically do what OptiCoat does but they literally said all you do is just spray your paint.

These cars love their rock chips I'm noticing. Already busted out the TouchUp paint on numerous occasions.

To huffington and k-a, I just checked out the 3M site on this stuff, here's the link: http://3mauto.com/products/paint-defender/usage
I think I'm sold on this product, looks like you can apply it anywhere.
I'm actually scheduled for 3M clear bra and 3m tints tomorrow morning on my '13 AW!! What to do now that I saw all of this?! Anyways, I'm not sure about the product, thinking about postponing the appointment now because of this product. I hope someone has used it so I can figure out my decision. I'd love to here other opinions. Good find huffington.

I may consider it as well. How much is it? What I like is that you're supposed to apply it over wax which makes things easier than having to prep it on an unwaxed surface.

Nm, from auto zone for all the necessary stuff and 3 cans which you would need for the frontal hood area, front bumper and rocker panels (maybe enough left for mirrors) you're looking at around $100. For just two cans getting the essential frontal hood and bumper it'd be around $75.

K-A, I saw 24.99 per can, haven't searched the kit price. I also saw some more videos on it too. The stuff is only good for about a year. With clear bra, I have a life time warranty. However, your hood concern is mine as well. Maybe I will just do the hood for the spray on. Got to think on this one.

Re: What do you think about the 3M Paint Defender?

When I was in high school I always wished a product like this existed. I think for me I would use it for long road trips then peel it off when finished. I'd like to see it the line is noticeable like with the clear film, you can't tell in the video.

I was thinking the same. Not as a permanent solution but a temporary barrier when going on a road trip. I saw somewhere that someone applied to the hood and the bumper but you need to be careful with the bumper and not apply too much as it may drip a little. I am also considering to do the rear bumper to prevent scratches and chips when people hit the car while they park in a tight space or throw their shopping carts etc.
