radio / clock won't turn off

(With apologies for joining to ask a question, I have searched, read, and attempted several fixes.)

I have a 2003 X5 3.0. Two days ago, I came out to find my battery dead. Traced the problem to be that the radio / OBC / clock will not turn off when I remove the key.

I've had the car only a short time, but this is the first time this has happened. I've changed the battery (so the draw overnight doesn't drain it), but I cannot seem to get the thing to turn off when I leave the car.

At the moment, I can turn off the radio manually, but the clock (and the upper backlit strip) stays on. Nothing else stays on. Everything else seems to be working fine.

The computer doesn't give any faults, and all checks are OK.

Any ideas why the radio would decide to ignore me taking the key out all of a sudden?

radio stays on

Hey....I just fixed one of these....e53 radio stayed on after key was removed....car wont "go to sleep".....if you can remove fuse #74 @ right rear of car and the radio goes off with the key out then you need to check the black connector behind the center console panel (left of console) right under the e-brake handle between the console and the seat...cupholder allows spilled fluids to get in the connector and causes this problem....who knew sugar was conductive....ha! PS...harness goes to the telematic system wiring
hope this helps some folks....Big J.Master Bimmer Tech

Hi, my 02 x5 3.0 has similar problem. The radio only works for about twenty minutes with or without the engine running. I am not able to change the date, time on other functions on the computer. I have removed the fuse from the back and radio turns off. Everything else works fine. Do you think this could be the same problem?

I will check it anyways. I hope I find the problem there. Thank you!
