E39?
I have a 2003 525i wagon, it has 158.000 miles on it, plus a new transmission. I would like to keep this car for a few more years, I would say we would like to take it to 190.000 miles. I have heard the e39 is a bulletproof engine or in other words a tuff engine! We change the oil every 4000 miles with synthetic oil. Should I try to keep it for the journey or bail out and get a later model? I would like to think these cars are good for high mileage. BTW this is my first beemer, just looking for some sound advise.

So, which are we talking about, the car or the motorcycle?
The death knell for the six is overheating. If the cooling system components have more than 90k on them, you're sitting in a time bomb. The engines are stout, but do have their Achilles' heels. Search here for common maladies, esp VANOS seals.
