Cam Position Sensor wiring issue FYI

For anyone who may be interested.......

photo of the plug end wires, under the rubber boot, of my recently changed out Cam Position sensor ('98 528i).

If the printed date on the wire reflects the manufacture date, this CPS was original to the car. So, 14 years and 188k, it certainly doesn't owe me anything!

As a matter of interest the insulation had completely fallen off each of the three wires, immediately under the rubber boot but is also severely cracked on each wire, at least 4" up the wire towards the sensor end. Looks heat related.

Sorry for the poor picture.

Interesting. I wonder how many good CPSs have been replaced as a result of this? Looks like the first thing to check (on both sides of the connector) before replacement.

Ed in San Jose '97 540i 6 speed aspensilber over aubergine leather. Build date 3/97. Golden Gate Chapter BMW CCA Nr 62319.
