Test Drive

Have been looking for a few weeks now for a new to me toy. I am not getting rid of the Z4 or anything else, just wanting something different. I am not wanting to spend a lot in purchase price and I know the cars I am at looking can be maintenance intensive but that's part of it I guess. I have been studying different forums to better prepare myself. One of the cars that caught my eye was this 1983 380SL with an asking price of $8995. Yes, potential money pit I know. It is located about 50 miles from the house. Drove the car earlier today and here is what I found:
Steering is awful, it ranges from sloppy to pure ****.
Sluggish acceleration, got a little better when it warmed up.
A little bit of water between the roof and the visor on the passenger side.
Electric passenger mirror would not adjust far enough out to be of use, it went so far then it clicked back and forth.
Drove it about 5 miles, which was plenty, and the odometer and tripometer never moved.
Electric windows did go up and down but they were very slow. So slow I was afraid to take them all the way down.
The best part about the drive was when it was over. It made me think of the quote in National Lampoons Vacation when Eugene Levy was selling the Family Truckster to Chevy Chase and he said, "You think you hate it now, just wait till you drive it." I believe I will pass on this one. But I must say I had a lot of fun in the Z4 today, it ran very well.

I am trying to figure why the hell would you do this after reading that post... You have the contemporary version of this car in a sense...why bother. If I had what you have and wanted to spend around $10K on something somewhat nostalgic, would get some form of 944. A properly owned one will not be that huge of a money pit and will return lots of driving smiles. Something like this...

I do have a 944 on my list of "local" cars to look at but it is pretty rough looking so I don't think I will. I just like the looks of the 380SL. I will say the 944 in that ad looks very nice.

The turbos can be a bit of a hassle but the S2s are pretty reliable. Another option is the 968...but they can be hard to find. Either way, would recommend one with the M030 suspension option. I know the late 944 turbos came with that standard; it does make a difference. Then again, if someone replaced the standard setup with coilovers or a good spring/shock combo, that would be good too.

Look's like a lot more research still to be done. There is a 944 close by that's not bad looking but it's out of the range I want to spend on a 4th vehicle.

I'm pretty sure if you bought an older Mercedes that you would be waking up at nights screaming. Unless maybe it was a 50s-60s 300SL but then that would run a tad more than your budget.

An older Mercedes would be good practice to owning that Ferrari 348 I want to buy in 2 or 3 years it sounds like A 50s-60s 300 SL is worth more than my life. I just saw a replica they were asking 180K for. A million plus for a real one.

FWIW, I would shy away from a convertible...the 944 is basically a targa with the large removable sunroof. I do not think they made many 944 verts...

Looked at another 944 yesterday and it was also pretty rough. I don't know why I ever thought I get a car for 10K or less that wasn't a total piece of sh**.

If I could find a good example of one I would go for it.
