Camaro sets record at Nurburgring

Camaro sets record at Nurburgring

The 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE has conquered the Green Hell, lapping the Nürburgring’s 12.9-mile (20.8 km) Nordschleife (“north loop”) in only 7:16.04, making it the fastest Camaro to ever lap the famed German track. The ZL1 1LE’s time is quick enough to place it 13.56 seconds ahead of the Camaro ZL1 with 10-speed automatic that Chevrolet tested last year.

“With chassis adjustability unlike any vehicle in its peer group, the Camaro ZL1 1LE challenges supercars from around the world regardless of cost, configuration or propulsion system,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “To make up more than a second per mile on the Nordschleife compared to the ZL1 automatic is a dramatic improvement and speaks to the 1LE’s enhanced track features.”

The Camaro ZL1 1LE takes Chevrolet’s track-focused 1LE legacy to an even higher level, with racing-based adjustable suspension components — including Multimatic DSSV® (Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve) front and rear dampers — special front dive planes and carbon-fiber rear wing, and exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tires,* in an extreme track performance package powered by the 650-horsepower LT4 supercharged V-8 engine.

The Nürburgring lap time was achieved with the ZL1 1LE test car’s suspension adjusted for optimal track performance and running the production Goodyear tires.

“The harder you push the Camaro ZL1 1LE, the more it rewards you on the track,” said Bill Wise, Camaro ride and handling engineer and the driver of the hot lap. “It offers total control, with the confidence that it will deliver lap after lap.”

The 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE (order code A1Z) carries an MSRP of $69,995, which includes a $995 destination charge (excludes tax, title, license, dealer fees extra). It goes on sale this summer.

they had to be quick because the engine reduces the power after 15 minutes on a track due to overheating

Same engine, same design. They just haven't driven this enough yet. I heard the updated 2017 Corvette still has the overheating issue.

The air intake in front of the radiator is possibly bigger for the Camaro.

That is a freakin Amazing ass lap time. If that Camara had better rear visibility and a little more headroom I would have bought one. Crash tests on that car were not so good either. Looks good and performs great though.

Never any GM product for me. This company killed 124 people with their ignition switches.

Plus the interior still sucks; if you are looking at dropping 70K plus for a dedicated track toy, then perhaps. If you are buying a fast fun car, this is going to be overkill...

I don't care about the Chevy is cr@p arguments or the fun car vs track toy - for Chevy to be able to put together a car for ONLY $70k that can lap the ring in this time is incredible.

Now watching the videos of this lap and lap videos of others doing sub 7:20 times and you'll see that driver here does an amazing job and has to wrestle the car round a number of corners - and the similar lap-times from Mercedes + Porsche cars seem a little more poised through the twisties at speed - but when you're comparing cars that cost 2 1/2 times as much, I think I can see why there is a difference. Remember - this car ONLY costs $70k, and it's right there with a 911 GT3 that is just shy of $200k. While you might well go right to brand snobbery, this is still an amazing feat from the Chevy team in my opinion, and you can't take that away from them, even if you think the interiour is 'cheap' - it's *IS* cheap for crying out loud!

LOL - I have owned a crappy Chevy interior car. 03 Z06. It is a great accomplishment for them but it does not surprise me. The C5R and C6R were insane race cars that they built with P&W. This is essentially a race car for the street and they have been achieving great results with doing that for much less than the comp since the C5 Z06. This is the culmination of those efforts.

It is still a dedicated track car for all practical purposes.

It's ulterly amazing that a Camaro set the record for fastest Camaro around Nurburgring. Personally, I thought it would have been a Viper to be the fastest Camaro.

The timings for a Nisan GT-R were semi-wet at 7:24, that 7:19 time was unverified I see. While I believe the times are probably
again, you miss the point *entirely* - this is a Chevy, not a GTR that's 50% more when new. Just because you can find a 3 year old one for 40k less than new, doesn't mean it hasn't started out at $101k.

For a chevy to get around the ring so fast is nothing short of amazing... because it's a ****** CHEVY for crying out loud.

I'd also reckon that when the tuners get their hands on this Chevy, they'll tweak it up a bit and we could be looking at 7:10 - 7:12

Of course, you'll then throw out the Nissan GT-R Nismo N Attack Pack - and I'll counter that it's a $174k car ffs, and the back + forth goes on. In the end, you'll snort at a Chevy no matter the speed around the green hell, and others will congratulate them. Oh well.

And you missed my point before where I said Chevy builds amazing race cars (not NASCAR, like real race cars) with P&W so it really does not strike me that they can build an amazing "cheap" (relatively speaking) race car for the street. They have been making cheap speed since my C5 Z06 from the early 2000s.

That being said, I would not want to actually own one unless I was competing on a track. I respect it for what it is...

If it was all about price to numbers, companies like Porsche would sell a lot less cars. People would just all buy Corvettes, Camaros, and the like.
