A man praying at Jerusalem's Western Wall on Wednesday found an envelope containing checks purportedly worth more than half a billion dollars, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The envelope, Post reporter Melanie Lidman writes, was resting up against the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where Jews traditionally leave notes in the crack of the stones.

It contained 507 checks -- each purportedly worth more than a million dollars -- from around the world. Each was also signed but not made out to anyone.

The Post reported that the man, who was at the wall to pray for financial security, turned the checks over to Jerusalem police, who have opened an investigation into the checks and their authenticity.

The newspaper quotes the Rabbi of the Western Wall, Shmuel Rabinowitzy, as saying many of the checks were Nigerian.

That prompted The Post to register this cautionary note: "There was no comment on whether or not the checks could be from the notorious 'Nigerian prince,' one of most prolific e-mail scammers, who suddenly had a change of heart."
