Question regarding (NY) license plates
I will be picking up my ED re-delivery at the PC on 08/13. However, My CA just informed me that the dealership is having difficulty in getting the (NY) perm plates for me to bring down to SC. Basically he told me the NY DMV will not issue plates for my new car unless it has the inspection sticker, but in order to get the sticker my car would have to be physically in NY and passed the inspection.
![]() I did a quick search and it seems like Jonathan is saying that people from NY who are picking up their cars at the PC will get temp SC plates issued by the PC, am I interpreting what he said here correctly? I also have another question regarding the front plate bracket. According to Jonathan, we would need to bring the front plate bracket & SCREWS if we want them installed at the PC (see post here). I do have the bracket but I am not sure when and where the screws were given to us since I have no recollection of receiving the screws at all. Should I ask my dealer for the screws? Can someone please help me out? I am really confused.

We had a number of customers from NY state, and we had no problems registering the cars without needing to get them inspected first. In fact, our registration service would return the plates to us with a small piece of paper that said that the vehicle owner had x number of days after the date the plates were issued in order to get the car inspected.

If your dealer can't get your hard plates or a temporary tag before your re-delivery, we can issue a SC temp tag as long as you are not a SC resident. We only budget this for NY and a couple other states that do not have the capability of issuing out of state temp tags. Most states make it possible for the dealer to issue the customer a drive away tag.
I would bring the front bracket with you just to be sure. Sometimes the VPC will put another one in the vehicle if it is missing, sometimes they will not. You won't need it however until you put on your NY plates as it is not required here. If you don't have the screws and the VPC doesn't put them in, we will try to locate some for you. If they were in the vehicle in Europe, they would have been in the glove box inside a small plastic bag. I hope that helps answer your questions. If you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. Look forward to seeing you soon

SARAFIL & Jonathan
Thanks for answering my question. I feel much better after reading your replies because my CA was in panic mode when he called me. Anyway, I know I could have eliminated this confusion by going with any one of the sponsors on this board but I wanted to stay local so I get better service in the future. Thanks again! Bimmerfest rocks!!! |

Hate to bump this old thread but...
Has this changed at all? Will be doing ED/PCD and bringing the car back to NY, but wasn't sure if the temp tag situation has changed.

I did PCD in Dec 2011. I am from NY, and took the car back to NY. I used Irv out in Illinois as my ED dealer. He mailed a temporary plate from Illinois to SC and the PDC placed that temp plate in window once my car got there. I left ED plate on front or car and PDC removed ED plate from rear. A few weeks after I got back from SC I received my NY plates in the mail, before temp plate expiration.

Temporary registration plate
If your state does not offer temporary or "in transit" plates the Performance Center will issue you a 30 day SC temporary plate. You cannot have a SC drivers license. This also applies to states that require an inspection of the vehicle before issuance of a plate e.g. NY, CA.
