E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Check Engine Oil Light
The check light by the instrument cluster blinks, so I check the lights above the rear view mirror, and the engine oil light is illuminated. I changed the oil about a month ago with full synthetic 5w-30. It drips a bit of oil, but when I check the oil, the oil level is right between the marks, right where it should be. How do I get that light off and/or solve whatever oil issue I might be having?

your car is 20-25 years old, the sensor will be broken. you can short out the level wires which from memory is on the sump (been a while since ive worked on an M20) or if you want to fix it properly and maintain the warning system, you need to buy another float sensor. it is very unlikely anything is wrong with your car other than this.

$151.50 from Pelican. Personally, I'd short the sensor wires like Andy suggested. I keep a close eye on the oil level.

i ran into that problem a couple times from just running a lower weight oil (whenever i didnt change it myself, the oil shops put 5w-30 when i asked for 15w40 stupid twits).

Well, adding more oil seemed to do the trick, although I'm not sure why. The dip stick was indicating that oil levels were right on target.

Ha! You're right. My mistake. He needs an oil pressure sensor sender switch, not a level sensor. Completely misread what he was saying.

you were right the first time. quit second guessing yourself. tends to get you in more trouble.

I don't think the level is meant to be between the two marks (halfway) as with some dipsticks. The level should be close to the top mark which is the full mark (but do not overfill it). I keep mine close to the full line to try and avoid oil starvation.

2 things:
Please keep oil between the indicated lines ! If the crank swhips around in the oil, because it is over full, you will know it after perusing your bank balance ![]() The oil level switch, is actually 2- Dynamic & static
