Huge difference between 2009 and 2013 328i xdrive

Hi,
This is my first post on Bimmerfest. My wife and I bought a CPO 2009 328i with xdrive in September. It has the premium package and cold weather package. We really love the car but noticed that when hitting bumps or holes on the highway it is very unforgiving. I have had sports cars in the past and do not expect a pillow soft ride but this seems a little too unforgiving. I've done some research and narrowed it down to the RFT's combined with the low profile 17" wheels. A lot of people are recommending Conti Extremecontact DSW's to remedy this.
A few days ago we had an issue where when we removed the gas cap to add fuel the car would crank for 10 seconds or so before starting. The check engine soon light came on and we took it to BMW for service. They gave us a 2013 328i with xdrive as a loaner. As soon as I drove away I noticed a major difference in the way this car drives compared to our 2009. Much better at handling road imperfections and very smooth and quiet. The '13 has the same size wheels and has RFT's. Why the huge difference?? Have they changed the suspension set up since '09? My wife drives the '09 primarily and she immediately noticed the difference without me saying anything to her.
If I do replace the RFT's with the Conti's, will I notice a ride similar to that of the '13?

On a side note.........the BMW dealership told me that the reason for the problem with our 328 (long crank, check engine light) had to do with computer software and they updated it. Something to do with the software and fuel vapor gate that opens and closes? Anyways, since picking the car up our fuel consumption has seemingly dropped considerably. We reset the computer at every fill up and have consistently averaged 22-23 mpg. since Sept. Now after two days it says we are averaging 29.8 mpg driving the same route to and from work. Could this be because they did a simple software update? I am going to check fuel consumption manually for the next couple refills and compare it to the computer reading.

Thanks, great forum!
Chuck

No complaints there eh....but....give it awhile to adapt.

Maybe new & different type of RFTs?

I found switching to Michelin on my xi from the original Bridgestones was an improvement in handling/noise/ride. YMMV.

Are we talking sedans? Almost certainly. The F30 328i xDrive is a totally new design with a new suspension design, plus 3rd Generation RFTs.

Even if both cars are Coupes, the suspension was changed in 2011 when the LCI was released. My 2008 was much more harsh over bumps than the 2011. Brake pads were changed too - lots of visible dust on the '08, nearly none on the '11.

2013 f30 twin turbo ?

That would be quite different .
Also by now they have better RFT's and have figured out how to make the suspension work
with them (after using there customers for RFT Lab Rats)
I replaced the RFT's on my wagon with DWS's and it so much smoother and quieter.

I have OEM ContiProContacts on my car and I like them. They're quiet, the ride is comfortable, and I have no complaints about the handling. After I wear them down I'll be happy to buy them again.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to try the DWS' to see if that helps. Maybe change shocks and struts as well.

3rd generation run flats and softened suspension are the key to this. Changing the struts and shocks will increase the stiffness again since your current dampers are now mature.
I went to Michelin Pilot Sports go flats but I am changing them out to Michelin Primacy run flats since they are 3rd generation and much more compliant...

This. There is a huge difference in suspension between an '08 coupe and a '11. The earlier coupes crashed over potholes and bumps. On the earlier suspension set-up, you'd experience 'pothole explosions', where as with the LCI and up, that was sorted out, along with the next generation runflat tire, really helped its case.

What can be done to the '09 suspension to make it handle pothole explosions more like the '11-'13's?

2013 RFT are much better than 2009 RFT so the ride would be lots more quite and smooth

also suspension set up and damping in the new one plsu lighetr steering make you feel the car smoother
