winter weather - eco-pro mode better?

I kinda like the way eco-pro mode short shifts the transmission and in particular with the colder weather the eco-pro mode has the throttle response of normal mode.

I wonder if the throttle response is adjusted for a cold weather conditions.

As a side note, it would be neat to have the throttle response of sport mode with the short shifts of eco-pro mode... maybe I'm crazy.

turbo cars in general LOOOOOOVE the cold. the colder the better. cold air also tend to be dry, which is also better. the atmospheric cold air cools the intercooler better which in turn significantly cools the (turbo) pressurized intake air, delivering more power, as the computer can adjust timing, AFR, boost, etc. to play happy with the cold air. back in my subaru days, car had more power you could feel when it was cold out. the colder and dryer the air the happier a turbo engine is (cold allows a denser fuel mix too). the opposite is the inverse, the hotter and more humid the air, the less happy the turbo engine is as cpu has to retard timing, enrich the fuel mixture, etc creating a bit less power.

you are just feeling your car have a bit more power... .

Eco-pro kills excited driving, hence your not as pedal happy, which is of keen importance when driving in wintery weather.

Also doesnt the X3 have an option for a customized mode, where one can select the driving preferences that you want.

Why does this matter?
CAUSE EVERY TIME someone says Lexus has better build quality, one should consider what Toyota their Lexus Engine and chassis platform comes out of and how long that part has been tested in the real world!

That's brilliant tango131... I never thought about that but it makes perfect sense.

My point exactly... eco-pro almost feels like normal mode in cold conditions.

It's physics, a forced-induction (FI) or normally-aspirated (NA) both use air and fuel to create the combustion. Add more of each to create more power. Cold air has a greater density. This will diminish with temperature increase, humidity or at altitude. A FI car, specifically turbo-charged, can compensate somewhat for altitude. This is why most car magazines will do performance testing in the morning (say 50F) and at sea level.

Switching gears (no pun intended), doesn't Eco-Pro mode reduce the current going to the auxiliary systems such as heated seats. If so, what is the result? I don't yet own a X3 but perhaps this would be acceptable once the cabin is at a comfortable temperature. Curious to hear feedback from owners.

nhman, the specific settings for each driving mode can be adjusted within the iDrive menu. I've disabled any HVAC tweaks in eco-pro mode to take FULL advantage of the creature comforts over the winter months.
