replacement radio
Can anyone advise where I can go on-line to get a replacement for a radio that died? 1988 520i. Need to have delivered to GE. Appreciate any suggestions.

Any DIN size radio will fit, however if you are planning on adding newer ammenities (like CD, Bluetooth, etc.) you'll have to rewire the speakers. I would suggest going to Ebay's German site and start looking there since you will almost for sure find a stock radio available there. I took mine off like 6 months ago and replaced it with a Blaupunkt unit with CD player, Bluetooth and USB connection (You can see it here). Good Luck!

Hey Jim, I came across your 'pics' post .....nice job....and nice car too.
Anyway, I was wondering what wire/harness did you hook your power source from........what was the actual color/connector of the original car's wiring did you use? I'm trying to trace a 'short' in my system and I think it has to do with an after-market install of the radio (radio is now old and dying......causing problems). Thanks for any info. BTW- I'll be posting more questions about this 'problem'. |

If you will be tracing any electrical problems, you need the ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual) for your specific year (Go here in order to get it). This will tell you the color of the wires, gage (thickness), etc. I used the factory full time on wire but used a new "switched" from the accessories fuse block by the battery. You can run two new wires from here since one of them is switched and the other is full time on. I managed to squeeze them by the clutch hose rubber seal so I didn't had to drill any holes. I had to drill one for the amplifier one since it a thicker gage (8 ga.). If you are going aftermarket radio, re-wire all your speakers which eliminates the factory 'fader' switch (leave it in place if you don't have an additional filler plug). After this all you need are the two wires from the engine compartment, the antenna plug and the antenna turn-on wire which is the white one.
Good Luck!

See, I want to put a factory (reverse?) harness back in the car because someone before me cut the wires. I found one on ebay for the 89; any ideas if this will fit?
An ETM would be quite useful for a car this old, however (thanks for that). |

The 89 is an E34 so it is a completely different radio and you need the older harness. Go to mye28.com and try posting a WTB ad. There is always parting out a car there so you should be able to find one. ETM's can be found online so do a search and you will find!
