+1. Take it straight to the dealer plus take pictures and get in touch with BMW NA. This is a serious issue and could pose a liability for BMW. Right now car manufactures are on their P's and Q's because of what is currently happening to Toyota. Let us know how this turns out and good luck.

guys i do not smoke.

i parked the car for the whole winter. Started the car up and drove it to work in the morning. i was smelled something burning but i thought it was due to the car not being started up for a 5 months.

When i get to work i see a half dime size hole in my leather seat smoking.

The burn is about half a dime, but the surrounding area is about a size of a golf ball that has burning stretch marks.

My drivers side seat currently has a hot spot when the heated seats are on high. When I first noticed it, I thought that something was on fire because it burned my leg (not a real burn, but it was hot!). I am guessing that the heating elements eventually get more resistance in certain areas as the car ages creating a hot spot. I havent turned the seat heater on high since then, so I am not sure if it would actually burn a hole in the seat.

i know the steering wheel gets very warm to the point of almost painful... so wouldn't be that surprised if the seats are the same...

this doesnt sound crazy. its quite possible the heating element has a defect. it should have a protective covering, but they arent always perfect. so yes indeed, this can happen. same thing with heating pads, theres hardly any difference. but yes, definately alert the dealership about this one as there may be or need to be a recall. so dont wait.

I had the bottom driver's seat cushion replaced today, due to the known issue. Pretty simple process, just took a few days to get the parts in.

Yes BMW covered parts and labor. I was first told that I'd be responsible for labor but ended up paying zero for the replacement!

Bmw uk refuse to do anything about mine (04) as I bought it second hand from a small dealer and therefore not covered by bmw warranty. They even want to charge me to look at the seat to diagnose the problem!!! - pretty crap service to be honest so if anyone has any evidence of bmw doing a repair please send to me so I can protest my case!

The service manager was familiar with the heated seats burning up in the 6 series. He contacted his BMW rep and once it was approved he ordered the parts. It did take about 2 months to get all this accomplished. It was pretty straight forward, as he mentioned because of the liability of getting burned or catching fire.

I have a 05 645ci and my drivers side cushion heater just burned a hole thru the leather. (Size of a pen tip) I thought I was stung by a bee but it's winter so knew that wasn't the case. I shut down the heated seat immediately and kept it off for a couple days. I Turned it on today and the cushion did not heat up at all but the back rest heats like normal. I would love to have bmw replace this for me. I feel they should after reading all the other people with the same problem.

I remember this happening a while back to another forum member. This is a big deal when it comes to safety in or out of warranty. I would talk to a lawyer to see what can be done if they don't replace it for you.
Any issue that can cause fire in the cabin is a big deal! What if children are involved? They would rather fix the issue than have it televised as a world wide recall and a huge settlement to put up with.
