Trading in my car, should I take out things…

I'm trading in my X5 for a different car, not for a BMW, so it's to another dealership.

They did the standard look around, pulled the Carfax, etc., gave me a trade-in value.

Seeing I'm trading it in, should I take things out like the spare tire (that didn't come with the car), etc.? I don't need these things, but why give them to the dealer?

You can make a couple hundred selling the spare and components but if you have non-run flats on it and the dealership you are trading it into catches it, they might ask you to bring it back in before they will complete the trade. Could be a hassle but if the dealership is near by, I'd probably pull the spare, jack, etc. I don't think there is anything else you can add that is easily removed, is there?

There are a couple things like factory crossbars, ski rack, license plate frame, even things like LUX angel eye bulbs, navigation DVDs (I run a "backup" copy I made anyways).

I do not have run flats, and the dealership didn't seem to care.

Depends from dealer to dealer.

What ever accessories you didn't submit to the dealers trade-in evaluation can honestly be removed and sold online (which is sometimes a hassle or sometimes a nice way to make some added money).

If however you first got the evaluation, and you want to remove them from your vehicle, you honestly can. For instance, license plate fram, LUX angel eye bulb, nav dvds. and spare.

Seems though you have a lenient dealer so honestly remove all that you want. lol!

I'll buy your spare and jack...

And I don't see why it won't; the bolt holes are in the same place, and there is probably a little compartment under that trunk cover to hold the spare. The jack is in the foam and sits in the wheel.

Yep, I looked under the cover and there is a big space for a spare ...but no spare. I don't understand why BMW puts runflats on the X5 and then offers a spare as an option. I looked at many,many new X5's and no dealer orders the spare tire option. ??

I'll probably take these extras out. I'm spending quite a bit on my new car, so that's why I don't expect the dealership to care too much about a missing spare on a trade-in.

I see you're in CA, not sure how I would ship this, but I guess when we get to that point, we'll figure it out.

I'd pull everything and try and sell it. That's what I've always done, particularly when trading to a different brand.

What are you getting to replace the X5?

Do you know if the cross bars would fit a 2013 x50i M-Sport with the brushed aluminum rails?

Sell the spare. You can make decent money out of it. If it is another brand, they probably won't be looking for the spare

If I ever jump ship, that's the first thing I'm taking out and selling to someone on here.

If the spare came with the car and is listed on the build sheet then you should not remove it after the dealer has appraised the car. If it was something you added along with the jack then it is yours to do with what you will.

I believe they will fit. I have only seen one part number for X5 crossbars.

cross bars are different between M sport and non M sport.

Sounds like it's too late now, but I would have removed the items BEFORE I took it to the dealer.

Do you still have the LUX angel eyes....I'll buy them

Thanks everyone. Looks like I will be selling the accessories, should be a good chunk of change. I will hold off the spare until after the trade-in, though I don't foresee an issue at this time.

Not sure, the factory racks clamp onto the load rails.

The spare was not ordered with the car as it was not available as an option at the time. Also the dealer only did a run around and pulled the Carfax.

Actually only the spare was in the car, though the dealer did not pop the trunk to check.

well maybe I misunderstood you. You took a car in to be appraised, they appraised it, and then after they appraised you're removing parts to sell and not informing them?

Well if you keep some cash in the car or your iPod and you take it in to be appraised for a trade in, I hope you don't leave those things in the car when you trade it in.

The crossbars and such were not installed. I have all the original angel eyes H8 bulbs, turn signal bulbs, so I'm putting those back in.

I didn't buy this car with the spare and jack, and they looked at my car's spec sheet and Carfax for the appraisal. Anyways, they said they will probably auction it off anyways.

It's not like I'm ripping the floor mats out or draining the gas.

When I traded in my last car, I had to put gas in it the morning of the trade. I can't remember the last time I only put $10 of gas in any of my cars.

If it wasn't there when you bought it(it's not OE) and they didn't see it when they appraised it, take it out. When my M5 goes back at the end of it's lease that's what I plan on doing.
