Expansion tank float 94 525i.
I have been reading posts related to the coolant light saying on. My 94 525i has that problem. I keep seeing references to a red stick and where it should be. I remove the tank cap and I see nothing but coolant about halfway full. No float or red stick. Am I missing something? Can I just disable the coolant indicator float? If so, how do I do that? I just had a new waterpump replaced, so do not want to lose my clean anti freeze.

Do I have to remove the expansion tank to do it? Should I be able to visibly see a float or red stick by looking in the tank? I can see no visual indication of a float. I really want just disable it. IMO it serves no real practical purpose other than just something else to break and annoy you.

You are not supposed to be able to see the float on the E34. Here is a site where you can get one.
http://www.rmeuropean.com/bmw-parts.aspx#Category There are many to purchase from though. Yes, you do have to drain the expansion tank, replace the sensor and refill. However, before you order or purchase a new one, make sure and inspect the wires leading to the sensor. They commonly wear through as seen here: ![]() I just spliced the wires and used heat shrink. Worked great. Make sure that you don't cut any length from the wires as they are barely long enough already. Hope this helps.
