Hi every one, i have some question wanna ask
hi every one,
i have some question about new series 3 2012 I found some people said that might be a design problem on new series of BMW. the problem is about the shock absorbers on the car, as u can see the picture below: ![]() it seems the absorbers dont have the "fastener" as below(circle in red): ![]() as result when the screw on the shock absorbers is getting loose a little. the tire will slice off as below: ![]() how do you think of this? but that was a new car use within 1 month. It should't getting slid down even the screw is getting a little bit loose. don't you think it will be more save with something to make sure keeping it "lock"? Last edited by meetoo32; 01-08-2013 at 11:29 PM. |

BMW has been mounting the front strut (it is a strut, not a shock) to the upright the exact same way for 15+ years. I don't see how the strut could slip as there is a ridge machined in the upright and the shock.
What is the story behind the picture you posted? Tim |

the car bought 1 month ago. i drive the car only to work in the city. and i haven't been hitting anything. that day i am on my way to the office at highway, somehow i smell some burning smell inside the car. so i stop to check the breaks and engine but every things seems to be fine. cuz i am getting late, so I have to drive down the highway slowly. and the smell are getting stronger. i stop the car somewhere in the city and take the taxi. after work, i call the truck to get my car back to the shop for checkup find out the "strut" was getting off. the engineer said the strut shouldn't getting off itself. and asking me if i hit anything. than i found out that the strut on the BMW is different to others(as you said it is a strut, not a shock). i don't know much on cars thats why i am asking~.~ |

Seems like a freak accident or something. As I said BMW has been building the front suspension the same way for years.
Can you take more pictures of how the strut slipped down in the upright? Tim |

Ineed, it looks like the shock has slipped lower (by 2 cm?) in its mount, causing contact with the tire. I don't think any of us here are qualified to say whether it is a design issue, a manufacturing flaw, an assembly flaw, or something else. Doesn't sound like anybody's encountered a similar situation, etc. Follow up with BMW and please let us know what they say. Hopefully it's a one-off situation and they can quickly repair your car under warranty.

Interesting. The E46 doesn't have that tab.
