Is this actually something a dealer/service dept can do easily?
Yes, your dealer should be able to easily recode the car so the default setting leaves ASS off. I saw many people on this forum posting that they had it done.

Far from it. The test schedules include cold and hot starts, a great deal of acceleration, braking, etc. This is why many can easily beat EPA estimates, especially in freeway cruising.

The weighting on those extreme cycles is lower than you may expect.

If they are still terrible, then there is a chance it is the car, but 99.99% of the time, it is how you drive and were you drive. Short 10 minute trips are terrible for mileage. We had someone a month ago complaining and swearing his car was broken because he was getting 16 mpg on this new 328i. Turns out he drove 5 miles to work and sits in traffic for 30 minutes on the way
I drive 5 miles to work in LA and do not sit in trafffic. Its 10-15 mins and literally a handful of lights and a few stop sign and average 16mpg. His car must be more efficient than mine. But im not complaining. 16 is better than 12. Havent even been able to reach ONE trip that averaged me 30mpg. But 27 is super green hybridish to me. Lol.

It seems to take 10-15 minutes to get the oil temp up to normal. If all you are going is 10 mile trips, you car is never getting fully warm and stabilized.

Take your car out on the open road and let it breath properly as suggested and see what it will do MPG wise.
Yeah andy fisher. Come to the track and let it breathe. You wont complain about your 16mpg after that session lol.

One of the main selling points of the new 2013 328i was its improved "best in class" fuel economy.

It sounds like people are mixed on how their own 328i's are doing with fuel economy.
But I can't imagine that our driving styles are THAT different.
There are many different driving styles!! You know the guy who is pissed and honks at everyone and tries to go fast in traffic by swerving in and out of traffic? (Im not that guy). Or the guy who quietly finds his way quickly through traffic? Or (dreaded) the dude who is causing traffic by going extra slow. Or the (even worse) guy causing traffic IN traffic?! Ha.
