New BMW tomorrow

My dad went and looked at a car for me yesterday (I was at MEPS and couldn't go) but I'm home now and going to look at it tomorrow.
Thinking about dicthing the ol' 325i and picking up this 1998 328i.

173k miles
328i Black exterior/Gray and tan interior
5 speed (obviously, f**k auto's)
Full heated seats, an oem alarm, premium sound, arm rest, and a few other little features my 325i doesn't have
No rust. Like literately zero rust on the underside.
Subframe mounts aren't torn.
Good shifter linkage, interior is a 8/10 IMO
Everything works, including the moonroof
Central locking works

Downsides:

11 button OBC. Have a 18 and could do the swap in a few hours based off of how easy it looks.

Needs alignment and new front steering bushings and such. My 325 needed the same treatment and it wasn't to expensive and took me a weekend.

Dude just got it in a trade and doesn't know when the cooling system was worked on last. So all new cooling system. Did the same on 325.

VC gasket weeping, and what looks like the oil pan gasket. So like a full motor re gasket could happen. Can drive the 325 until I finish that thou.

It needs to be lowered bad (stock height) and I'm doing it right this time with H&R and billys, instead of racelands just because I plan on keeping it for a long time and I want to just want to work on reliability and handling.

Paint is a 6/10. No dents but little scratches and such. Dad is painting his 85' 635ci gloss black this winter, he said he would split the cost of paint. So like $130 after a clear and some coats.

Needs brakes. Did on 325. Easy but a good ammount of cash.

Because it's got the motor I like (Cheaper insurance then the M3, cause I'm 17 and can't afford that, but some more torques then the 325), the number of doors I like (Coupes are more sexy but I haul friends around often), is a color I like, and is rust free..... I'm thinking long term project car.

Just doesn't make sense throwing more money in my 325i. It has BAD rust everywhere underneath, major body work that needs to be done, it needs paint, window regulator, central locking restoration, moonroof restoration, Door panel restoration, failed ABS system, a failing AC system, a failing heater core valve, worn shifter linkage, and even after all that it will still be a 92 325i that has 279k miles. I'm thinking I'm going to cut my loses on this money pit and start on something better, a better money pit

Dude wants $2,800

Could prob stay under $5k total to get it pretty looking and mechanically squared away.

No he has no records besides a clean carfax, and I do my own PPI cause I know more about these cars then any mechanics around me

Opinions will be welcomed

Lots, really most, older bimmers around here have rust. Fully rust free E36's around me are rare

Nah I was at school. I'm going at 3:45. Gonna offer $2,400 and work from there, figure we'll meet in the middle at $2,600 which is what I'm willing to pay.

I'll update with pictures if I end up buying it

He kept saying he was 100% firm he was at 2,800. Then we made up a story about how he sold a similar car with more miles for more cash. Obviously BS but yeah. Gonna point out every problem and such and I'm sure I can break him.

That's the point of the 1900. After you've picked the car apart (politely of course) you hit them with a very low number that will shock them and make them contemplate whether they've overpriced the car and if they'll just get the same reaction from future buyers. When they balk, make them give you a number, and bam, you're negotiating with a previously "firm" seller.

I've actually counted out cash and handed it to people while we were still negotiating. Works wonders.

I don't like being dishonest in transactions though. It's typically easy to spot someone running a story and also easy to trip yourself up.

Cash is king, for sure. I counted out $300 for my first car. Talked him down from $500.

When I sold my car I had a guaranteed buyer of $2700, which was lower than my asking price. Another guy came to look at it with his "mechanic" friend to look the car over. I told them about the previous party too, but obviously the first party can understand I will take the asking price before I take a less amount.

So onto these 2 guys that are at my house, he tells me in this nervous voice that he'll give me 1900 and I have to sell the wheels and stereo with the car(the first party said they didn't want them). I told him again about the first offer so he says he doesn't believe me and offers 1900. At that point it turned into a "get off my property" situation.

My advice, just be a respectful negotiator and most people will work with you on the price.

Problem was he didn't establish rapport with you first, and he asked for the moon. He was serious about wanting everything for 1900, and also had no confidence about getting it. Not to mention accusing you of lying. All terrible things to do in negotiation.

I'm suggesting it as an ice breaker to help push the starting point for negotiations down a couple hundred bucks.

And again, building rapport is key. You're on the sellers side, their friend. It's not a battle, just a friendly debate, interspersed with small talk.

I've told people like that guy to pound sand as well.

I agree with everything above, but one thing is undeniable: Chad is the master of buying and selling cars. Can't argue with that.

^ This. I think he's made money on everything he's owned except the MB that never ran, and I believe he broke even on that one.

You mean the 90 300SE? Bought it for $350 and sold for $700, but when you factor in that I had to keep insurance on it to have it just sit there for months it basically was a wash. Would've been a fun car to get running.

Edit, the one I didn't make money on was my first car, the Supra. Paid 3000, sold it for $2700 sans engine or transmission, and paid 2k for a head gasket in there as well.

I agree. I think he brought his buddy just to intimidate me and make me think the car I was selling wasn't worth it. He also drove over an hour to see the car, and that is after I told him what the first guys already made an offer.

It's the belittling of the seller that will get you. Worst he can do is say that it's not enough, and the bargaining just goes from there.

And chad, I wasn't making a stab at your offer, just showing my experience to help this guy out.

Didn't think you were, just pointing out the numerous missteps I saw the person make so no one else has to make them. No reason for any offer to ever escalate to a get off my property situation if the buyer approaches it right. Some people just don't have any tact or interpersonal skills.

Ended up buying it. Payed $2,600. Alright deal in my book, bunch of little things that need work but it's a rust free project car. I'll get pictures tomorrow. Considering it's got 100k less and the better motor, I already notice more torque. When it's all squared away this thing is gonna be sweet.

Remember how this car was a replacement for my 325i which had body damage? I drove it to the our shop and threw it on the lift.
On the way home I got T-boned by some old lady who ran a stop sign right into my right pass/rear door/rear quarter panel.

f**k.
