2007 550i 104k miles....major oil/coolant leaks
Darn it!! Almost sold this car at 97k miles but the deal fell through. So decided to keep it past the CPO warranty and run it a long time.
so what happens? oil leak evidence on garage floor at 104k miles. Great local Indy shop finds not only the two front covers leaking (very typical, says they go from 103 to 107k miles...wish I knew that), but a couple coolant leaks. The worse is the valley pan gasket...yes UNDER the intake manifold. In addition, the alternative bracket may be leaking...not sure until he fixes everything else, cleans it up and lets it idle for an hour to see if more oil shows up. Says the colder weather also helps initiate these leaks. Straight up guy. Most of the estimated $3000 cost is labor. The only good news is these will last another 100k miles....so I am definitely keeping this car. I asked what else fails in these cars...and said the transmissions can be iffy. They either last forever or they crap the bed where one morning they just wont go. Praying for the last forever tranny. Crap. Anyone else have this engine with this many miles? A 6-series had the same issues...same leaks last week at this shop.

The 5 and 6 series share the same engine so it makes sense that they would have the same issues. My car is going to be going in to get valve cover gasket, mechatronics sleeve, active swaybar leak and brake vacuum pump leak fixed soon. I dont want to but I'll be going to the dealer since they offer replacment part warranty. I'll be moving across the country in a year and would like having piece of mind/go yell at a local dealer in case something breaks shortly after. Oh BTW mines is at 97K and I've been expecting these issues for awhile now.

Considering it's a 60k+ car, paying 3000 at 100k miles for repairs is not to be unexpected. I keep looking at the Scion FR-S. Then I get into the 550i, turn on the seat heater and steering wheel heater, listen to the nice stereo, feel the comfy seat, and enjoy the steering/suspension. Truly, the E60 is an amazing car, and the 550i is the best of the breed.

I have to agree. I did just spend $700 on new front thrust bushings (another common issue). but for piece of mind and longevity. I just wish the car was paid off! Another year and no car payment will make this feel much more worthwhile.
