Do I Need to Keep My Engine Cover On?

N52 engine, is there any benefit to keeping the engine cover on? does it keep dust out of stuff or is it purely cosmetic?

Cosmetic, the cables at the back will have nothing to rest on, but otherwise it's just there to keep dust out.

Not sure on the n52 but the n62 has insulation on the underside to quiet the loud injectors. Without it , it sounds like a diesel.

I would keep it on just because, it doesn't add significant weight, it makes the engine bay look better and if there's another benefit why remove it?

There is no insulation, it serves no purpose other than a BMW logo. Hardcore N54 guys run theirs off. Like pjinka says there's no reason NOT to have it on because it doesn't increase performance or anything, but it doesn't hurt anything to have it off.

I like the look of engines without plastic covers. The N62 intake manifold is awesome, it would look fantastic polished. But for noise insulation I leave it on.

Leave it on. Mine has some foam on the inside which does reduce noise, but it also slightly reduces the temperature of the heat radiating to my hood. I've seen cars with spiderweb looking cracks in the paint on the center of the hood... I'm guessing this is from heat.

Engine heat is primarily from the exhaust headers, and those aren't covered at all, at least in the case of the N62. The intake manifold under the main cover is much cooler, since fresh air is flowing through it.

Aesthetics aside, having run with and without, IMHO it is slightly quieter with the cover in place.

I guess that is why the cover is shown in realoem under the heading "Engine Acoustics".
