5spd vs. 6spd
Hello I am new here I have a 2003 525i with 299.000 miles and would like to know should I replace my tranny with a standard 5spd or swap for M5 6spd.

Stay with the stock box. Not worth the excessive costs to upgrade.

+1, Stick with what has been done before. There are probably computer related changes you would need to make to change over to the 6 speed.

BMW did just that in 2004. They stuck one behind an M54B30 530i but probably had to modify the driveshaft to accommodate the different length transmission.
The E60 box would probably fit the 525i too, but not without driveshaft modifications. Also, the 525's came with a Getrag not a ZF, which many say shifts more crisply than a ZF.
