Angry My butt was burning

It was a cool morning yesterday so I turned on the seat warmer. It wasn't long before my daughter and I both noticed a bruning smell at first I thought it was coming from outside the car however as we drove on the smell was getting stronger.

All of the sudden I felt a stinging in my butt much like if a bee had stung me so I decided to pull over as quick as I could so I could get out of the car to see what's going on

Well to my surprise I notice my seat now has a burn mark on it from one of the heater elements Well, I guess I know now what the awful smell was it was the leather burning

I guess I'm off to the dealer for a new front seat. Thank goodness I have an extended warranty

I wonder how often this problem occurs...

I have seen other posts regarding this issue.

Are you sure you did not compromise the leather by eating too much spicy food?

This is not the first time I've heard about this. This is a dangerous problem and can definitely be a liability to BMW. Keep us posted. Let us know if the warranty covers this also because I am thinking that it may not.

Damn that sucks. I find it hard to believe this happens.

Here is another thread with the same issue.

The older 5 series were recalled for this. BMW has been known to pay for your cloths if they were damaged! My seat gets this hot all the time, when I smell bacon I know to turn down the flame.

I'll be stopping in to BMW to see my SA on Thursday. When I know more I'll post an update.

I bet that BMW will cover this, without asking. To much potential for a law suit!

The same thing happened to me with my 2005 645. BMW fixed the heater and replaced the leather on the seat. They also paid to replace the pants that the seat burned a hole in with no questions asked ($175).

My car is literally sitting at the dealership right now waiting for the new seat covers to arrive from Germany. I had an element burn through on the left upper lumbar. Horrible smell just as described above and singed my clothes.

I called BMWNA and they had someone contact me about 3 days later. He agreed to replace both upper and lower seat covers and cushions as well as my clothes. The leather pieces cost over 1K each, I have no idea what the cushions cost, but I'm willing to bet it's $500 each or something ridiculous like that. Adding the parts, labor and my clothing ($450) all up and I'm into them for somewhere around $4k. Plus, I've had a loan car for over a week.

The catch? I had to sign a release of liability so that they are guaranteed I won't sue them for their dangerous defect.

If this happens to you contact BMWNA! They are just too happy to help you and avoid the potential lawsuit.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you.

My claim has been sent off to BMWNA for approval. I'm just waiting on an answer.

Good for you bro. I went the opposite way; contacted BMWNA and then they had the dealership contact me, but either way should work out fine.

Oh, and I got my clothing check in the mail today.

Same thing happened to me. BMW Beverly Hills replaced the whole seat bottom and $450 for my damaged clothes. Took about a month because they had to get the part from Germany but they provided me with a rental as well.

DAllas,

Your sig looks like a pic of your girlfriend picking you up after a long stay in prison. Not a bad combo when you've been locked up. Two favorite rides.
