Question Painted Kidney Grilles

I have a black sapphire 528i. Technically I haven't done any mods to it yet, but I have a pair of black sapphire painted reflectors on the way.

In the meantime, I want to paint the two silver fins in the front bumper next to the fog lights and also replace the kidney grilles. Should I make sure the fins and grilles match each other? For example, I was considering painting the fins gloss black and going with matching gloss black grilles. However, now I see I can get black sapphire painted kidney grilles to match the rest of the cars paint.

What do you think would look better? I'm not sure if I should do everything in black sapphire, or if I should keep the grilles and fins gloss black for some contrast. Any ideas?

Thanks!

No tint. It's factory.

So many options! I'm still thinking gloss black, or maybe paint the rings to match my paint and keep the plates sliver.

I like this way the most for mid-color to darker cars.

Which way? With the rings painted to match and leaving the plates silver? Or all black?

The rings painted to match the car's body color, yes. The plates will be silver or black, depending on the grille's style. In your case, it seems that you car is black sapphire, in which case painting the rings to be black sapphire also and leaving the fins gloss black can be seen as a very subtle mod. Discerning enthusiasts will notice the difference. There are several other posts with some photos...I think that this one, specifically, is the fin and ring combo that you will have if you paint the rings to be the car color and leave the fins as silver.

In this post, Thanks to BigDeep1, you can see several combinations:

This may have made your choice more difficult, not less

Thanks! Yes, my car is black sapphire and the grilles are chrome surrounds with chrome slats. I am thinking about going with either of these two options:

1. Painting the grille surrounds black sapphire and leaving the slats chrome.
2. Painting the grille surrounds gloss black and painting the slats gloss black.

Regarding the fins:

1. If I go with option #1 above, paint the fins black sapphire.
2. If I go with option #2 above, paint the fins gloss black.

Thoughts?

I personally think painting any part of the grille black sapphire is more trouble than it is worth. Once it is on the car, it probably won't look noticeable enough over the gloss black that can be bought.

Is one of your goals to save a little money (vs buying the grille already gloss black)? You can buy an OEM black F10 performance grille for under $140. BigHungry did a great job painting his grille surrounds black. It is a fun DIY; however, a similar effect can be had by buying a pair of the performance grilles and swapping things around like I did in my thread.

RambleJ has black grilles on his beautiful Black sapphire F10. It has a cool custom dramatic effect. If you like that murdered out look, go all black. Personally, I prefer the gloss black. The only issue with painting is that it is a lot more work and you run the risk of it chipping. The grilles do get hit with a lot with it being front and center.

RambleJ has the first post on pg12, thus you can see his sig pic:

Various colored grilles on my first post:

Thank from this post (w/ link to my picasa album), you can see how I swapped things around:

I think that the M5 grilles looks great on black cars. The reverse m5 grille has a more custom look. The all black performance grille looks all business.

Maybe you're right. I'm still debating.

I think so too.

I like the M Performance grilles (all gloss black), but to be honest I am somewhat worried about going that route because I'm not sure if I want to black out the entire car completely. Therefore, I am leaning towards the reverse M5 grille which has the gloss black surrounds with chrome slats. However, is it possible to buy a reverse M5 grille or does it have to be painted DIY?

Friend, I have given you the link a couple of times on this thread, including the post right before you asked this question.

I love the look of the all black F10 Performance Grille; however, the wifey did not like the all black look. I think the M5 grille looks good on dark cars; however, I don't think it has enough contrast on lighter color cars (with it's chrome ring/trim).

I bought a pair of the all black BMW Performance Grilles. I disassembled the ring and grille and matched it with the black/chrome grille on my 535i. I like that the trim is black, and I still have subtle chrome with the black slat/chrome 535i gills.

I love the result!

BMW Performance grille on top, OEM 535i grille on bottom

Disassembled and configured my new grille (on top). The left over is a beautiful M5 grille !

My new custom reverse M5 grille on the left, and the original on right.

All done!

The icing on the cake is that I have a gorgeous perfect set of BMW M5 grilles that I can try, or sell. I love that these grille sets are BMW made

BigDeep1, I'm thinking I'll probably do the same as you did with using the M Performance Grille and put the 528i OEM slats in it. I like the gloss black surrounds, but with the chrome slats. It's not as "hardcore" as going all black on black. You keep some nice contrast by having the chrome slats which will match my rims (I don't plan on getting black rims). Was it hard to disassembled and reassemble when you switched out the slats?

It wasn't bad at all. The trickest part is getting the grilles installed if you are not able to do the yank trick.

ALL the information you need is on this forum. Use the search function here (or on F10 post), and you will find a lot of great advice for the install.

Best wishes buddy.

Thanks. I read a lot about replacing the grilles themselves, but how about the actual slats? (when you took them off your OEM grille and put them on the M Performance grille) Do they just snap off and on?

I bought mine from BMW..found some online too but there was not much of a price different so went ahead with BMW..also that since I wanted to change the slates with the OEM grills, I was confused if third party grills would fit nicely or not
