Solar battery charger for 2011 X3

Hi Everyone,

My dealer replaced the battery on my 20 month old 2011 x3 and told me that I'm not driving the car enough and need to hook it up to some type of battery tender on a regular basis to keep it fully charged. Since I live in NYC and have no garage, I have to park my car in the street. This being the case, I can't easily connect a regular battery tender or trickler to my car by running an electrical extension cord from my house to my parked car.

My question: can I use one of the solar powered battery tenders I've heard about and, if so, what size and model do you all recommend?

Thanks!

One thing to consider when shopping for a solar battery tender is how you're going to connect it to your X3. Don't forget that the cigarette lighter outlet in your X3 will shut off after no more than 15 minutes, and isn't suitable for use with a battery tender. Your choices are limited to battery tenders that connect via alligator clips, or ones that connect to the OBD-II diagnostic port.

Thanks! I'd read about not being able to use the cigarette lighter but wouldn't I have to leave the hood open to use the alligator clips? I do remember hearing that someone makes a solar charger that connects via the OBD-II port and thought that this might be the best way to go.
