Problem resetting Oil Light- doesn't "hold" the new setting

have a 2006 530i, when I reset the oil light, it changes to 16,000 briefly, but when I close out of screen, start car, etc., it goes back to "0". Never had this problem before, brought it to my local import mechanic (not BMW dealership, but works on BMWs only), he says he's never seen this happen before. He tried a couple of times, it reset to 16,000, then back to 0. I'm concerned that while I was trying to do this myself, I got into an obscure screen with numbers and codes and I might have screwed something up. Any suggestions beyond bringing it to BMW dealership where I was told they'll probably replace the circuit panel? Expensive! Thanks
