There is alot of difference between the 535i and 550i. One of the most glaring ones will be felt when four hefty adults are in each sedan with full loads of luggage and travelling uphill. The 550i has diesel-rivaling torque and that is the most important factor when starting from a stop or in passing acceleration or in being able to handle increased resistance (ie increased load). The 550i will carry the hefties with alacrity. Conversely, power inadequacy will be felt in the smaller engine.
