Z4 Service eng. light

Hi! Folks, I need help in resetting my engine service light. The light indicates service eng.soon. I last serviced the engine on my 2004 Z4 3.0I about 5500 mile ago at 27000 miles. I have always used mobile1 oil, and so I usually change oil about every 7500 miles. The last time I changed the oil, I reset the light in accordance with my Haynes manual and it worked fine. Now I'm just trying to get the light out. Should I have to change the oil again to accomplish this. Thanks for any help. Albie

I don't know about a Z4, but a Z3 does not know when you change its oil.

On a Z3 you can stick a wire into the diagnostic port under the hood per these instructions:

Also for a Z3 you can buy a foolproof tool here. It is cheap but takes 3 weeks to arrive from China:

A similar procedure and tool probably exists for the Z4, but I don't know about them.

The yellow "Service Engine Soon" light indicates a malfunction in the engine control system. You would need to read the codes in the computer to determine which system the malfunction is in. You will need a scan tool to reset this light. The maintenance indicator is in the Drivers Information Center display for the On Board Computer. This would be one displaying the maintenance required message (forget how it is worded) to let you know you need an oil change. This is the one that you can reset manually. If you have reset this as it sounds, it should indicate "15000 to service" for a second or two when the engine is first started.

But the SES is a different system, and, as mentioned, you need a code reader to see what is wrong, and to reset the code.

Some auto parts stores will read the codes for free.

Hi guys! After calling a euro car repair shop, and being quoted 90.00 dollars to do a scan, I decided to call around,and found auto zone would do it for free,every dollar counts. They sand the system, and found code 0411, which is a faulty Air combination valve. Probable cause (1) faulty air solenoid valve (2) faulty air pump motor. My question now is with out going to the dealer, where might I find out which is the problem, and where might I purchase the part? Also does anyone have a diagram of where they might be located? I'm also considering buying a scan-tool, any suggestion? Thanks Albie
