Low Fuel Milage

Hi there,

I bought certified preowned 2010 BMW 528 xDrive and I am noticing that the fuel mileage is not that great. It is around 19 mpg in local without Heat/AC and 13-14 mpg with Heat/AC.

I am not sure if that is normal. I am thinking of taking it to dealer for service and get checked.

Suggestions Plz.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, that's worse than my 550 by a good margin. How many miles? Any misfiring?

Not sure about the 528 xDrive, but I can say that I average about 18 overall (a lot of highway driving) in my 550i. You may not be all that low on mileage actually...

+1000 that is way worse than my 550 too, I thought mine was bad at 15.8 mpg, but I only commute 3 miles to work - all on local streets.

Ugh, I bet I'm averaging less than 12 when I'm in downtown city environment without heat/AC. If I'm climbing hills in the city, that can drop to around 4-6mpg (lots of stop signs thrown in). I think I'm averaging around 8-10 mpg in downtown environments with traffic, stop and go, idling, and parking garage circling.

Best way to tell if fuel economy is good or bad is to take a long highway trip. Set the cruise control to 65/70 and on a relatively flat highway, you should be getting around 28mpg or better. If you're getting that or better or at least close, you're fine. Obviously reset the trip computer just before you start your long highway trip.

Good advice there, and it could save you a trip to the dealer

That sounds about right honestly, since you have xdrive. In my 528i, I see 18mpg if I do strictly downtown city driving with the Heat/AC on and around 28 all highway. The variance between city and hwy is much higher than with my other cars.

You also might want to keep in mind that the mpg displayed in the car is cumulative, not instant, so it displays the mpg since the last time it was reset.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will test the fuel economy on freeway.

I have my service appointment with dealership anyways, so i will ask them to have a quick look at this as well.

OP, all of the suggestions are good, but you especially need to verify your mileage. Before running to the dealership and wasting money on dealer guesses, I would do a true manual calculation by filling up with a tank of gas and resetting your odometer. Drive the car as you normally would and empty the tank. Note the mileage when you refill to full and divide the mileage traveled by the number of gallons it took to refill. If it really is low (still in the 13-15 range city or less than 20 mixed driving), THEN I would let the dealer diagnose. Wondering if its a MAF (mass air flow) sensor issue if the fuel mileage really is crap...
