Angel Eyes Done!

After 2 days of install. It is finally done.

Day 1: Wiring, install angel eyes on right head light, clear corner right head light.
Day 2: Install angel eyes on left head light, clear corner left head light, install remote.

the X didnt come factory with Angels? well at any rate they look awesome!

Picture of ECU. Here I tapped into the accessory power supply. This is what makes the angel eyes light up when the key is turn to position 2.


Relay, 12V power and ground.

I was scared ****less during this part. Headlight housing apart after baking in oven @ 200F


Amber reflector removed.


I used siliconII (operating temperature up to 400F) to glue on the angel eyes.


Housing back togeather. No more ugly amber reflector!

Challenges, hmmmm, the whole thing was a challenge since there wasn't really a DIY guide out there. I had to follow the E46 guide which is really similiar. Heres some of the problems/challenges:
- Removing headlights
- Removing amber reflector
- Glueing angel eyes on
- Wiring power from engine bay to glove compartment

Baking the headlights and opening it up wasn't actually hard at all. Just really scary. I also have a video of the angel eyes lighting up when I unlock the car and dimming when I lock the car. I'll get that up once google video approves my vid. I'll also put a kill switch for the angel eyes once i figure out where I want to put the switch. Next mode, ash tray garage door opener and engine start button! Merry Christmas everyone!

wow cxongrats on the install.. looks awesome cnt wait to see them lit up.. I love the clear corners ive beenw anting to do that its really bothering me but im scared to take out housing and take apart and rip the amber off.. especially on my lease..

Don't even think about doing a mod like that on leased car...its just asking for trouble, unless you are 100% certain you will buy the car at the end of the lease.

That is not absolutely true. If you really want to do it and you got some money. I suggest you go this route. Go buy a pair of new or used headlights to install the angel eyes or clear corner. That will run you $1500 for a pair of new headlights or around $700 for a pair of used ones (ebay or online junkyards). When your lease ends, take out the mod'ed head lights and pop back the old ones. Like I said, it would be a very expensive mod but I would think you would be able to sell the mod'ed headlights on ebay for a good price at the end of your lease. I think a pair of used angel eyes head lights with clear corner would go for $500 on ebay. So $700 for used headlights + $150 for angel eyes - $500 sale on ebay after lease = $350 cost to have angel eyes and clear corner for the during of lease.

Yes, would have made a lot more sense to just buy the car or lease the car with Xenons from the factory.

In general, modifiying a leased car, is a pretty dumb move. Particulary when talking about mods that void warranty - like when the leasing period (36 months) is less than the warranty period (48 months). That said, I'm sure there are those who do it all the time and then get a huge bill at the end of their leases for the cost of restoring the car to factory specs and are dumbfounded as to why.

Wow! I think that looks great! I would love to do this, but I don't know if I could bake my headlight assembly at 200 without having a meltdown myself.

Beautiful work!! I think I'd give meself a heart attack if I were to attempt what you did. How did you get the idea of putting the head unit in the oven?

I had alot of help from the people that I got the angel eyes from (www.jlevistreetwerks.com) and did alot of research on other BMW models that require baking of the headlamps.

Just a few questions:
1. Did you inquire about the part number for the OEM clear corner reflector? The Euro housings have that same shape reflector, but in white.
2. Did you have to bake the housing because the projectors won't come out? Or because they do, but it's impossible to hold & glue the rings through the projector openings?

I'm not sure I'd do the angel eyes, but I'd like to try out the clear corners without breaking the bank (i.e. purchasing a set of Euro housings).

How much would it cost for just the clear turn signals?

dang that looks hot I wish i could do that except they cost quite a bit ($300 i think) and I'm definately not the kinda electrician/do-it-yourself person especially to mess with a $40k BMW. If i could get someone to install those for me on the other hand........then I can get my friend with his X5 to shut up about his halos (he doesnt have xenons, I do).

Plus, baking the headlight assembly in the oven does seem........scary? I'd like, panic and watch every second to see if anything melts down or somethin

I did some searches and were not able to find a part number for the oem clear corner reflector. I think if you want the clear corner reflector, you have to buy the entire housing. Since I didn't want to pay $1500 for a set of euro housing, i just took out the amber reflect and spray painted it with some high temperature metallic silver paint

Yeah, Euro housings are a little bit too much for such a small cosmetic change...

I just followed the E46 insturctions that came with the purchase. I didn't really take alot of pictures during my install as I was too eager to complete the project. When I have more time I'll try writing a X3 specific DIY.

Okay... How did you do this. I was under the impression that all X headlight assemblies built after 2002 either came with AEs or could not be baked due to a new heat resistant sealant.

Adaptive Xenons works fine, that was the first thing I checked after the install. It's been one month after the install and everything is still working perfectly.

I think that only applies to certain yr X5s. None of the 04-06 X3s comes w/ AEs. To my knowledge, all 04-06 X3s headlights can be baked open.
