2000 m coupe totaled?

I believe I totaled my car last night. Spun out in the rain and slammed a cement barrier at about 60 mph. I suspect rear axles broken, at least three of the wheels are and tires demolished, drivers quarter, drivers fender, rear bumper cover all damaged beyond repair. Drivers side airbag deployed, and I suspect frame damage. My question is, and i'm fairly certain I know the answer already, based on the damages, and the lack of available parts, does it sound like a total loss? Granted each state has their own criteria, I feel and pray it's totaled as I do not want a repaired m. Thanks, Mark

Sounds like it to me, but your adjuster and repair estimate will determine for certain.

Bummer. One less M Coupe.

no pics

Couldn't take pics for safety reasons. I wasn't going to stand in the middle of a busy interstate in the middle of the night in the rain to snap pics., but I may go to the storage yard where it sits tomorrow.

So far i'm fine, thank you for asking. It was a horrifying experience, and not to sound dramatic, but i'm very lucky to be alive.

Bummer man. I'm sorry that happened. On my 1 week anniversary with my car it rained for 3 days and on the third day I hydroplaned at an intersection on a left hand turn and hit a curb. The damage wasn't as bad as yours but the feeling is awfull.

I have found that it takes very little moisture on the road to induce a slide. m coupe + rain =slide.... question now is, do I buy another if they total mine? I feel gun-shy now.

Tough Night for Coupes

Your description of the damage indicates your car is totaled. Air bag deployment and big damage to the rear of the car (really expensive to fix) pretty much guarantee this. But the Coupe did it's job - you came through OK. Think about it for a minute, you walked away from a high speed wreck, that little car did well for you. Perhaps another one isn't all that bad an idea if you like the car.

I came across a nice stretch of black ice last night and got t-boned by an SUV (I couldn't go, he couldn't stop). Took a big hit to the ribs but I'll live. I'll find out tomorrow if the car can be repaired. I don't have a problem with a repaired coupe if it's done right, I hope this one can be fixed, I have plans for this car. Regarding the ease of sliding - it's a fairly light car with big tires and can hydroplane, but so can any car. Good tires in good shape are the only insurance I can think of.

What's up with the autolink crap?

The hyperlinks in my last post related to those round things cars roll on - I didn't do that. Seems to be a Bimmerfest "feature".

It did it's job for sure ! I absolutely love the car, but living in the north east makes me wonder if one should be a fair weather car only...

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but glad you're ok. Any damage other than the door and windows?

I'm concerned about the B pillar and the damage to the rocker panel. But I'm not an expert when it comes to these things. I'm lucky to have a truly good body shop here and I'm waiting for their expert opinion about what's really wrong.

Went by the body shop today and didn't get a good feeling about things. They hadn't worked up an estimate yet but the guy I'm dealing with said he thought it might be totaled. Only way to tell is to pull the door off in order to get a better idea about the extent of the damage. I OKed that but my gut feeling is they really don't want the job. I'll pay some $$ to see what they come up with as they have been a good shop in the past but I'm starting to look for other shops and options.

Two (2) less Coupes in one (1) thread? Glad you guys walked away, but be careful out there!

I drove my 99 M Rdstr through eleven (11) Ohio winters, and proper (tall-narrow) snowtires are the only way to roll. I never slid or lost traction, in up to 8" of unplowed snow, unless I was intentionally cutting up in a parking lot.

You can blame the tires (or the drivers ) but don't blame the car; I found mine to be very impressive in snow/on ice.

Fortunately for my ///Ms, they're now re-tired in Florida! Does wonders for their driver too!

Hopefully you don't "re-tire" anytime soon Randy! Every time I look at your photo gallery I'm amazed at the precision of your work. I have the 27th and 28th off this month, should I plan a trip to SW florida?

Hi Fred, I never know where you'll pop up!

I did receive the last bits for your car, now I just need to finish the one occupying the lift so that the midpipe can be fitted. I guess the short answer would be definitely maybe! I actually put some pictures from a day or so ago in your album early-early this morning. Now if I could just get the work order put together...

That sucks Marty !! I still haven't heard from the insurance co., but they did tell me they'll get to it Monday at the latest, and that just with the info they have, looks like a total loss.

Randy, i wasn't blaming the car as much as I was blaming the poor weather conditions and the unkept roadways in Philadelphia, and as you stated, I was driving on summer tires, and accelerating when I hit the "mountainous pavement joint". Bad combination all the way around.

I have contacted a couple sellers , but have not heard from any regarding another coupe.

The coupe lives. I'm shopping the shops for the best repair. Had the car towed to a friend's shop and pulled the door last weekend. Really fun to drive sans door. Car tracks straight, no steering problems, no funny noises. It seems the damage is all body. So next comes getting the door and fender done.

Hahaha, my friend always takes the doors of his jeep and we joked about doing that to my coupe. It's hilarious to see one actually like that. Best of luck in getting it all fixed and back to perfect.

I've toyed with the idea of doing a Mad Max/Rally Car thing with the coupe some day. I know it's perverted but it has a certain appeal - a lift kit, big wheels, light bar, brush guard, and a blower. Might be fun...

Got the estimate. The car has not been on a lift to my knowledge, so this was a ground inspection. $10,400 was the estimate, they totaled it. They offered me $14,385 less my deductible. I didn't accept. They said if I can submit documents giving market value rather than N.A.D.A., they would re-evaluate, and so i did. I had my gf fax them over 20 pages of comps nationwide, sales trends and various info, now i'm waiting for their reply. I think $17-18 is fair.

Paid for?

Glad to read that you came out of this alive man.

If this car is paid for, or if it's not and you can break even - or make some money over that - take the money and get yourself a different BMW. Based on the extent of the damage you've described, and by looking at the wreckage, this car is a goner. Sad, but true.

Personally, over the years I had to let go three exotics as trade-ins for various reasons, and after several you get used to it. Don't fall prey to a money pit. Just keep your memories in pics, framed or saved otherwise. There's more fish in the sea!

You might also want to point out the KBB value of your car, to help counter NADA. I looked mine up a few days ago (2000 M Coupe), and it was over $25K as a private party value. Yours may vary depending on miles.
