Microfiber towel and severe static wiping down dash

I tried using a microfiber towel this morning to wipe dust off my dash. As I was gently brushing the towel across the dash, I experience severe static electricity that was so severe it caused the electronics in the dash, such as the instrument cluster, to flicker and turn off then back on in a split second.

Has anyone else experienced this?

What should I be using to wipe down the dash? A damp (standard) cloth?

Damn. How old is the cloth? I used one last night that was very plush and not one of the cheaper ones that tend to be rough. Not that that is the reason you experienced what you did but just a thought.

Brand new pulled from the bag right before I used it. Maybe that's why. Perhaps I should wash it.

Yes. You may also want to look into special soap to add to washing machine made just for micro fiber. I got mine from DetailersDomain.com

I don't know what caused that, but I have used the miniature California Car Duster for years on the dash and displays and it's outstanding.

I just use a damp cotton towel that I had just used to finish drying the exterior. Also works better than a dry cloth/towel to remove dust from other interior surfaces, rather than attract more dust with a static charge. I keep things pretty simple and my interior is basically spotless.

That's weird. I started using a slightly damp MF on my F10 interior but I used to (and still sometimes do) use a damp small chamois on the interior. It works perfectly, IMO. I'd have a MF on hand as well to dry glossier areas like wood or glass to ensure no water spots dried up.

Search the Internet for Plexus plastic cleaner. Spray a little on a good quality microfiber cloth on wipe down the dash, instrument cluster, navigation screen and trim. This stuff works great and actually helps repel dust and static charge. There are threads about it on Bimmerfest.
