Hey Guys, I have a 2012 550. When I sit at idle, it feels as though the car is going to stall-out. Any thoughts?? Thanks guys!!

I have a 2013 550 and while idle, it does have a minor jolt/shake to it but goes away quickly. It doesn't always do this. Is this similar to what you experience?

Same here...it happens rarely, about a one a month, while stopped at a single and last for a two or three seconds. Then disappears.
No precursor: Warm engine, cold engine, long runs, short run, comfort, or sport plus. Just happens and goes away.
Maybe just the ghost of Chris Bangle visiting.

This has been happening to me as well. I experience a rough idle as you describe about 30% of the time I'm stopped. I took the car to the dealer a couple days ago and they told me everything is running properly. On the way home (a block from the house) the rpms dropped to around 250 and I thought the car was going to stall. This lasted for 2 seconds and then things went back to normal. Unfortunately there were no fault/error alarms. The dealer has no idea what's wrong and advised me to bring it in if it happens again. If anyone makes any progress in this area it would be much appreciated. I'll keep you folks updated as well.

Somewhere there was mention that some fuel brands work better than others and I think smooth idle was mentioned as well. BMW has a list of approved fuel vendors, probably on the mother ship website.

Give that a look-see.

Fuel Brand?

Just wondering....I've had 6 BMWs in the past and have not been selective on the type of fuel, other than premium, and usually use the cheap stuff (Arco, Valero, Costo) because it was convenient and cheap. Never experienced any idle problem until now. First occurence was about 1000 miles so I don't think its a fuel build-up issue.

Link below has some info but I'm a still a little skeptical. OR, has BMW evolved so much that it finicky about fuel?

Thoughts anyone?

if you usually used cheaper brand gasolines I think you have may have an issue with bad gas or injectors. fill up 2 tank fulls of V-Power gas and monitor. If gas good,I-level up to date and no faults you may have to replace all 8 injectors. Last year i had 2 N63 engines in the workshop that they randomly stall and no faults stored the injectors fix the stalling issue. If techs remove the spark plugs to inspect will help his diagnosis.

Thanks MINI+BMWtek...Great Tip!
Gas brands are very plentiful and competitive in So Cal so finding Shell V Power is not a problem. The few cents extra for V Power is cheap insurance, if not peace of mind.
Saves me from visiting the dealer and hearing the ever common "we can't duplicate the problem in the shop" answer.

FWIW, after two incidents where my 550i misfired and ran in "limp-home mode" for a while, my dealer show me the list of "top tier fuels". The one I'd been using -- Hess premium -- was not listed. I have switched to Shell, Sunoco, and Gulf since then and have not had a repeat. (Well, at least, not YET.)

We fill up with Chevron Techron 91 for years on all our cars. Any one else use Chevron as well? I know ethanol played a role with the previous N54 engine. Can someone shed some light on that with these newer generation turbo engines?
