F12 Trunk Does not pop go up

I just bought a 2013 F12 - 650i convertible. When I open the trunk it does not pop up. I replaced the struts which makes it easier to move by hand but it still does not pop up. Is that normal?

Trunk Lid

I have a 12 F12 Vert. If you are saying that your trunk lid doesn't rise clear to the full open position upon unlatching/releasing, neither does mine. In examination of mine, I can see no mechanism to raise it to the full open position. I never questioned that mine only popped open and had to be lifted to the full open position. Others might have a different experience.

That is what I thought. But I have seen newer 650's where the lid pops up to a fully open position. Maybe there was a change in design. I also see there are two piston like pins on the trunk lid that hit metal plates when the trunk is closed. Mine don't seem to have much resistance and when I open the trunk the lid barely moves. I took one off and couldn't see a way to increase the internal spring tension, or maybe they are gas charged which might be how the lid pops up. Any thoughts on that being the answer?

Looked at the pins you referred to. To short a throw and to little recoil to push the lid up (in my estimation). Nothing else in the trunk area that would lead me to believe there is anything that would raise the trunk lid to the full open position. Again, there may be, but I don't believe so. I monitor the site regularly, so if you find something, post it so that I might check my car.

On my previous 650i Coupe, once it was a few years old, the trunk lid didn't open fully in cold weather (50% open). In >60deg F weather it would open 100% with the button.

Asiansensation7 has it correct. It is typically a problem that happens in colder weather (probably why it is rearing its ugly head this time of year). I had the same problem. I complained to dealer and they could not replicate on a couple of visits. Finally had a reason to take car to dealer in Winter and explained problem in detail. Still no joy. I told them try first thing in the morning at 7am with car outside all night. It worked! They replaced the struts in the pop-up mechanism and all was back to normal. I assume the struts just lose power over the years.....good luck!

Same problem on a 2013 650 ix Coupe. Dealer replaced on final warranty service the "SOP Trunk Struts" Part # 51-24-7-228-501 (Gas Pressurized SPR). Looks like they can be bought for around $55 each.
