Horrible rattle/popping noise from windshield in cold temperature
I have a 2013 35i. It's 4 months old now. It's the first winter and this morning was the coldest morning of the year (yet) here in the NYC area, with temperatures in the mid 10's.
As soon as I started driving, the entire windshield trim was making a constant, incredibly annoying, plastic-y rattle / creaking / popping sound. I thought the windshield was going to fall out. I figured it would go away as soon as the car heats up but no. During my 1+ hour commute I had to listen to it, and let me just say it did not make an impression of quality. The same thing happened on the drive home. Anyone with similar experience? |

I didn't get any replies but just to close the loop (and in case someone has the same problem in the future), I figured out the whole thing:
It was caused by ice that built up around the front. Probably inside the windshield trim and various parts. The night before the extreme cold came it rained/snowed. So some water must have gotten into these parts and froze overnight. And for the past few days it's been so cold that all that ice never had a chance to melt. Not even from the heat produced by the engine. So this morning I poured a lot of winter windshield washer fluid all over the windshield, to let it flow wherever the ice built up and melt it. Soon enough the noise was gone. |
