Tools for head gasket job

Anyone know a good place to rent the timing tools needed to do a head gasket job.

Also do I have to worry about anything involving timing when taking the head off? Or just when putting everything back together?

If you go over to BF.c there are guys that rent them out all the time. Usually so something like $50 bucks.

Yes!! Timing is critical when removing the cams. Check out Pelican Parts writeup about how to properly remove the cams without breaking them. Once the cams are out I think you shouldn't have any problems regarding the timing. Make sure you take the head to a good machine shop and have them deck it and check your valves. I would ask a local independent BMW mechanic who they would recommend to do your machine work. If the head is not flat, you will be doing the HG again soon. Also, check out the DIY over on bf.c and use the pelican parts articles for the different stages of tear down. Make sure you label and bag every electrical connection and all your hardware.
