Is that the brightness setting adjustment, or does it do something additional?

I'm using the Moon+ eBook reader app. It gives me a lot of adjustability control, and I tried a couple of times to make it imitate the kindle settings, but I'm having a real hard time doing it.

Yep, I was showing the brightness setting. It has "touch zones" at the top and sides. If you touch the top section of the screen, you get all the menu stuff, including a little "lamp" that controls the built-in light. Tap away from it and it disappears.

It also responds to sliding a touch, so you can do a tiny little finger swipe to change page from either side of the screen.

Amazon and kindle really got it right for eyes comfort in terms of font and background tones right out of the box. Moon+ gives me all the controls to change anything I want. One days I stood at Staples and tried very hard to adjust everything on my Moon+ app to be as closed as I could get to the Kindle. Put a Kindle demo piece and did a side by side. I like the gray background and black font. That way you are not staring strait at a light. But the Kindle does it so much better. I'll have to keep working on it.

It would have been nice of Moon+ would give a "Kindle like" theme in addition to the 22 themes that come with.

BTW, this is Nexus 7, with the Moon+ free app, and the Moon+ Pro paid app. ($4.95 IIRC).
