parking brake switch broke off

came off in my hand. parking brake still works but a PITA to use now.

not due for service for a few thousand miles so wondering what this might cost to fix. i have an extended warranty. i suppose all i can do is hope it is covered.

kind of amazing that switchgear breaks off in less than 5 years of use.

My father-in-law broke mine off two years ago when I let him use our X5. He handed it to me when he gave back the keys. Awrg.

Dealer replaced it, no questions asked.

Soldmystang, did your extended warranty cover the replacement of the parking brake switch? If not, how much did it cost?

Emission, was your X5 still under warranty when the dealer replaced the parking brake switch?

My vehicle is no longer covered by any sort of warranty and my parking brake switch broke off this week, with plastic pieces flying about the car. In my case the rocker switch (plastic paddle) appears fine, but the supporting pivot points, one on each side, are what actually broke. These points are supported by very thin pieces of plastic so it's no wonder to me why they broke. Also, once broken these small pieces can easily fall into the holes on either side of the switch base, presumably never to been seen until you take the center console apart. Since I use my parking brake every day I guess I am "lucky" I got as many years out of mine as I did before it broke. I too am able to insert the paddle back into the switch and move it while taking care not to dislodge it.

The following should apply:

Step 1 Remove iDrive controller knob
http://bmw.workshop-manuals.com/X_Se...ex.php?id=2550

Step 2 Remove center console trim
http://bmw.workshop-manuals.com/X_Se...ex.php?id=1628

Step 3 Replace switch for electromechanical parking brake

Mine was under warranty, and it broke the same place as yours... the thin side snapped and it lost its hinge. Flew out!

Our X5 was under warranty, so they replaced it.

Mine was covered under extended warranty. SA said he had to push a little but got it covered.
