Swap m5 Engine and Tranny on my E 34?
Hey guys,
My 1995 525 auto with 117k is in excellent condition. I can purchase a 1993 m5 motor and its mated 5 spd transmission with 113k. All intact with all the parts and hardware. Cost 3grand. That seems high to me, what would the labor be for the swap? And is it worth it ? Is this overkill since because even thought I love the look and feel of my E34, My other BMW is an E39 540i 6spd with 73k. Opinions Welcomed !!! |

You need engine control systems for the swap. I would guess that the swap is mostly a bolt in, though not one I have ever heard of being done. Your 525 is also missing the large case rear diff the M5 uses, unless that is in your parts list. Installing a large case in your 525 requires a new rear subframe as well...I think anyway.
You are also missing M5 brakes/suspension, which you may want if you have M5 power. I would say the swap is emminently do-able if you have the skillz ![]() I think $3k for an M5 engine and trans is a bargain considering a rebuild with factory parts is $10k-20k depending on who does the labor (you or a shop).
