rattling sound under cylinder cover
Having a noise on 2003 z4 causing me concern. Rattling sound under cylinder head cover when accelerate or rev engine. Have removed cover but do not know what i am looking for. Does not seem to affect performance.anything a novice can look for or is it more serious?

Might be your vanos system. May be time for a rebuild

Are you positive that is where the noise is coming from? Can you reproduce it your garage? A "rattle" sounds awfully terminal if it is truly coming from your valve train, but it could just as easily be something loose in the immediate vicinity.

Could be the DISA valve. Do a search and see if the rattle match what you have going on. The DISA and be unplugged to eliminate as a problem. This is on a e46 however the same applies to the Z4.

The freezing weather this winter is taking out DISA valves all over, We have been selling them as fast as we can get them in. Im betting disa aswell.
