New to BMW and looking to purchase a 2004-2010 5-Series
Hello all, I just wanted to introduce myself as I begin my quest of purchasing a BMW. I am completely new to this manufacturer (I have owned Honda/Toyota/Chevrolet) most of my life, and am considering the 2004-2010 BMW 5-Series models. I'll be honest, I am very unfamiliar about the reliability, maintenance, etc about these cars, but have done a little research into them. The impression I am getting is that these are extremely expensive to maintain. I have settled on the idea of an 04-10 5 Series since the 3-Series is too small.
Any guidance anyone can offer me or direction as to what I can expect? I am looking to spend around $10,000-$13,000 on this car, looking at mainly models with 100,000-140,000 miles. |

more guys will soon respond but for now here is what I know. You can find a 5 series within that price range and mileage fairly easily. The vehicle will likely be closer to an 04 than a 2010, unless the mileage on the 2010 is beyond what you're looking for.
My experience has been that these are strong cars, incredible to drive, great to look at and always something to look forward to. However I think it's the expectation that anytime you purchase one of these vehicles with 100k+ miles, you should plan on an annual expediture of $2-3k in maintenance/repairs. What typically needs repairs? It varies and I'd leave it to someone else to describe those situations. But to avoid disappointment, you should make the purchase knowing this is to be expected. Having said that, I don't think its unreasonable to purchase one of these vehicles, service it regularly and have it last another 100-150k at least. Again, I defer to some of the more experienced guys on this assumption. |
