Comfort Access door handle sensor

I have a 2008 750i and now that it's out of warranty I have an issue with the driver door comfort access. The sensor that senses you have touched the handle isn't working in that door (others work fine). The handle will lock the door when you push it, but you can't open.

I believe this means that the sensor is broken versus it being the cable, which often seems to be water/weather related.

For fixing this I found three options:
1) dealer - for about $800 to get a whole new handle assembly
2) ebay/breakers to get a replacement handle and then paint to match
3) take the handle apart and change the sensor (not sure where to get a replacement though)
4) live with it and just use the remote to unlock

anyone got any other suggestions or details on what #3 really entails?

thanks, Alan

You can buy a handle from ebay & take
It apart & swap out the insides . This
Way you don't have to have it painted .

Or you can take yours off & apart to see
If you can repair it . I had a problem
With a handle & I decided to take it apart
& found a broken wire on the sensor inside
The actual handle part . I crimped it back
Together & all was working again .

thanks! good idea on swapping the sensor to avoid painting, i didnt think of that approach.

i am guessing loose connection could be my issue as it used to be intermittent, but is now is broken all the time. is the handle removal relatively straightforward?

Yes very easy with the right tools .
You'll need a long extension with socket
for removal . & a hook type tool for
re-install . To take it apart you will need A set of pin removers

I have a similar issue with my CA. The from passenger door will not respond to CA, but the door will open when I unlock the car. I found a door handle off ebay and I wanted to swap the inside as suggested to see if that will fix my issue. I have few questions:
- Can I buy any right side (front or back) CA door handle and just swap the inside or it has to be a front right?
- I have not removed the handle so far to see if the issue could be a wire. I know there is a way to open it without removing the door panel. There is a DIY about it on this site.
- If for example it is a sensor issue, can I just swap the sensor from any other door handle I purchase or it has to be the whole unit.

Afletche, did you fix your issue? or what is the update on this issue on your car.

Thanks

Also if you take apart your door handle you might see that the antenna wire is broken and needs to be solder back on.

Which wire is the one from the antenna?

Woow.. I would be upset if this happens to me. I love bmw and i am planning on driving these machines for a long time unless something changes my mind. I had a dodge in the past and it was so simple to do any type of work. I felt like i had mechanic skills until i had this 750. I constantly have to check this site to learn stuff and know how to operate the car better. I'll remove the door handle this weekend to check it out. I'll keep you guys posted.

I had a similar problem where CA wouldn't open, but CA would lock. Some doors worked for both.
I was also seeing "Remote Control Discharge" messages periodically when starting the car, too.
Turns out all I needed to do was replace the battery in the key fob. CA works fine again.
This may or may not be your problem, but it was much easier than replacing the handle.

I replaced the battery on both my remotes when i bought the car few months ago. This is a handle issue to me.

So I just removed the handle and I did not find any broken wires. I put it back and it still not working properly. I am planning to buy a handle to replace it. I would like to know if the rear right (RR) will fit the front right (FR).
I found a FR from a 2006 750 CA and the seller told me that it works. The same guy sells a RR from a 2008 750 CA that also works. He told me that both handles do not have the same part number.
Will the rear passenger door handle fit on the front passenger side?
Thanks

The handles from the same side of the car do interchange. I just moved a broken front pass to the back pass side without any issues.

I have a 2007 E66 (750Li). About six months ago, the drivers door handle developed this issue (not responding to Comfort Access touch). about three months later all the doors stopped responding to CA touch.
I had a dealer diagnose the problem and this is what they found:
Driver's door, front passenger door and rear passenger door handles are all "bad" with respect to Comfort Access. The CAS computer controller has detected "a fault" in the doors and shut this feature off on all doors (only one remaining, anyway). The odd thing is the dealer said there were no fault-codes logged which related to this problem? So they had to systematically unhooked each door, one at a time, to determine which doors were good and bad. I found this interesting.
The dealership's solution was to replace all four (since they felt it was only a matter of time before the fourth handle failed). The front handles are priced at $260US each. For some reason the rear handles are priced at $630US each. They are factory painted to match your VIN color, so as not to risk a body-shop painter disturbing the electronics of the "touch" feature, I was told.
Although this seems very pricey to me, for the convenience of this feature I was considering the repair. But, the dealer had no assurances that the new handles would have any longer life than the originals.
At this time I have chosen not to have the repair done.
As for buying replacements on eBay and swapping the painted portion: My understanding is that the Comfort Access (CA) door handles need to be "programmed" to your VIN. Is that not so?

I hope this information was helpful.

When I fixed mine, I bought a part on ebay and just swapped the handle. The color didnt match so I exchanged the colored piece of the handle. Mine was plug n play..its still working now. No programmation was done

OK! That sounds like I have a MUCH less expensive solution to pursue. Thanks for the advise, Torvektheo!

For what reason keyless entry AND keyless start suddenly stop working. Fob has new batteries. Are there fuses for CA?

Ahh you found the broken wire. Good exploring. Add an extra piece of wire so it doesn't snap while you're trying to assemble.
